** No more chaos on your desktop. Keep related files on in groups. **
Lifehacker verdict: “If you've got a messy desk, this app can help you regain control.”
The app lets you create groups of related files on your desktop. You can freely move groups of files around on your desktop and add or remove files via drag & drop.
Each group has a title so that you can organize your files any way you like. For example, you could create separate groups for each project you are working on, or add separate groups for photos and text documents. If you frequently take screenshots, that would be another good fit for a group. The possibilities are endless.
Quick Look integration: press Space or ⌘Y to open a Quick Look preview of the selected file.
• Group related files on your desktop
• Add/remove files via drag & drop
• Freely move groups around
• Resize groups by dragging either edge/corner

What's New in Version 1.5.2
Addresses a problem where the app could become unresponsive when there are a hundreds or thousands of files in a group.
My desktop was always a mess, even when I used Windows. On that platform I used a program called Fances to organize folders and files into groups, and missed it when I changed over to Mac (best decision ever, BTW). Then I found Rico’s Desktop Groups program. It was featured on Lifehacker. What a lifesaver (OK… not literally, but you get the point).
The last version introduced a bug where the app would not finish loading after a restart. I worked with Rico to test a fix (which is this version). He is responsive to problems, and a great guy to work with.
If you need to get your cluttered desktop organized this is a great program to do it with! If you don’t like the Groups way of organizing, you can check out his other program Desktop Shelves on the App Store.
Fences for OS X almost!
I will start of by saying I love this app, I only bought it because I am a user of Stardock’s Fences for Windows on my home PC. I wanted something similar for my MacBook Pro. Desktop Groups is the answer. I only have a few suggestions that would make this great. 1. You can drop files and folders into the desktop groups but cannot add anything to folders in already in the group; this is one of the features that is missing that would make it an identical clone of fences. 2. Backup is also another good feeature to add. 3. Autosorting options would be great as well. 4. This is really a Mac only feature request if possible, different desktop groups for each group.
I would give a full five stars if only the first suggestion was implemented, anything more would knock the rating of the charts.
Good App but...
Pretty good App exceept for a couple of things:
You can’t drag a file from an email to a desktop group to download it. For example, select and hold onto the file, press F11 to show the desktop, and drag the file to the dessktop group—it doesn’t work. You have to drag/download it to the desktop first and then over to the group.
You can’t just directly drag the sides or corner of the group to resize it, you have to select the group first, then resize it.
Organizing file in a group is not so easy—you can’t select multiple files to re-arrange them. They all "snap to grid.”
But the app is worth getting if you want to get rid of all the files on your desktop yet still have them all there and organized!
