This is a great program. The lessons are interesting, and play levels go from easy to difficult. My 4 and 6 year olds are learning the game, and it's helping novice players like my wife and I too. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to introduce their children to chess!

"This is a fantastic chess teaching game. This game alone makes it worth buying an iPad. My three year old now knows the piece names and basic moves. My six year old is well on her way to playing a full game. Our family has had an iPad since the day the iPad was released and this is one of the best apps we have."

"This has been fantastic for my five year old son...using this in addition to a real board and pieces has helped him immensely in understanding each of the pieces, how they move, their strengths and weaknesses...a terrific way to introduce young ones to the game without overwhelming them"
* Great learning tool - by Triplescoop
"I have an adopted 7 year old boy with fetal alcohol syndrome. It is very hard for him to learn to play games. Checkers was very hard for him to learn. I thought that chess would be something that he would have to wait to learn. I bought this app even though there were no reviews. So glad I did! What a great teaching tool! I love the mini games that teach the directions that each piece can move. We play slowly but my son can play chess! I recommend this for anyone who wants to learn the basics of the game. This app is for beginners. Great for kids! Thank you to the developers of this app!"

Great Intro to Chess Tutorial for Kids!
On the PC, I found 2 great chess training programs for kids: Dinosaur Chess and Fritz&Chesster. The criteria was
1) It had to be a training program
2) It had to be appropriate for 4-8 yr olds
3) It had to give kids the basics (how piece move)
As of 2011, only Dinosaur Chess has been ported to the iPad. Dinosaur Chess will teach how all the pieces move, castle, check, checkmate, and stalemate. As a chess coach, I know how to do this one on one. With my daughter, I found she accepted correction by the computer easier than the correction by dad. The computer patiently corrects the child whether it be 1 or a 100 times, and the only way to get to the next level is to get the answer correct (especially important for those children that love a good test of wills). In addition, the computer makes it fun, and if you want your child to play, that's an extremely important component to learning.
In addition to teaching the rules, it has 6 different levels of play, starting with one side having 4 pawns and a King against 8 pawns and a King and working up to a full board. By reducing the pieces on the board (initially), it works a child towards checkmate, which is VERY important when teaching a child the game. Overall a great chess tutorial for kids.
Awesome for kids & grow ups!
As a kid I always wanted to learn chess and no one would teach me. When I had kids I decided I would make sure my kids would learn. I got the app hoping it could make it fun for them to learn, and found it made it fun for me as well. The games, when learning how to move the pieces, reinforce the material, and aids the learning process. Multiple levels of games help to build confidence to play a "real" game. My son 7 now loves chess and belongs to a club, and we play a game nightly. Thanks for teaching me later in life and giving my son and I new activity to bond over.
For three bucks, this is an excellent teaching tool. Really cool and simple games-approach to learning the basic moves in the lessons section. There are multiple levels in the play level starting with very simple board positions. Best way to use these is to have an adult sit with 5 to 8 yr olds. Well worth the money. My 5 yr old sat with me for over an hour focused on this one activity - a first! And seems to have really got the hang of the Knight moves which have been understandably difficult without this tool.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
