Movies, shows, news, sports: you name it, DIRECTV NOW has it. It’s all the channels we already subscribe to—like ESPN, HBO, Nickelodeon—but available on the go. And a clean interface makes browsing stations a pleasure.
Overall not a bad app
I’ve only had the app for about a month and so far, I haven’t had the issues others have had. That being said, I do have a couple of problems with the app. The first problem is that it doesn’t give you all the shows “playing now” if you want to watch live. You have to go to the guide to get all the shows playing. I have many channels marked “favorite” in the guide and under the view all shows available for watching live filter, only half of those channels are given to choose from. The second problem is the recording option. I understand this feature is in beta testing right now but DirectTV NOW needs to fix what is, at least to me, a problem in this feature. I’ve used the recording feature twice on the same show. The first time I recorded an episode, the app missed the first five minutes of the episode but recorded five minutes past the end of the episode. The next time I used the recording feature, the app started recording eight minutes BEFORE the scheduled episode started and then it cut off BEFORE the episode ended. I have this feature scheduled to record again one more time. It will be interesting to see how this recording turns out. I’m giving this app ⭐️⭐️⭐️because, overall, it does what it’s supposed to do; I just wish it would do it better than average because it has the potential to be better than average.
Many things needed to be fixed
There’re so many small things that not running well. The biggest thing to me is the inability to smoothly transfer from one program to another. Say 1-2pm I’m watching live tv, also wants to go on watching 2-3pm schedule. Then when it’s 2pm, screen froze and turned to black. I need to exit the current screen (which is black), then hit guide, hit whichever channel I am watching again to re-enter. This is very very very annoying.
When World Cup was on, it ran to extra time/penalty shootout often which passed the schedule time to next program and I had to exit/re-click every time which was such a bummer when the match was so on fire.
It got worse. Now (after several updates they had) when I’m watching on demand or recorded content, when it passes the schedule time of live tv channel I last watched, it froze and turned black. I didn’t want to write a review until just now. Because I was watching one on demand program that forbid fast forward. When it froze and I exited and re-clicked, the program resumed on 3mins while I was in about 25mins. If I want to go on watching this program, I’ll have to watch everything all over again (because no fast forward allows). And what will happen after next hour shift of program? I’ll lose progress again? Then what’s the point?
There’re other options for live tv and on demand. I was ok with direct tv now but now I think I’d better try those other options.
