Disk Drill Media Recovery
By Justin Johnson
Open the Mac App Store to buy and download apps.
Disk Drill is the most user-friendly data recovery software app for Mac. It can recover lost data from your Mac hard drive, or any disk you can mount to your Mac: USB flash thumb drives, cameras, card-readers, external hard drives, iPods (Shuffle, Nano, Classic, Mini), mobile phones, other Macs connected in target mode, etc.
Disk Drill can help you recover your lost pictures and photos, music, documents, applications, videos and other data. "Quick Scan" and "Search for lost partitions" are capable of recovering previously deleted data if its meta-data is still stored in the file system, or can be reconstructed. Alternatively, "Deep Scan" works on a lower level and analyzes disks as binary entities; it can get your data back based on file signatures, however, original filenames, locations and properties might be unrecoverable.
Disk Drill Media Recovery supports all known file systems: HFS, HFS+, FAT16 and FAT32, NTFS, EXT3, EXT4 and will even work with disks that were formatted or initialized and currently have no file system on them. If your data is still there and recoverable, Disk Drill will get it back for you.
!! Please Note: Disk Drill Media Recovery cannot recover data from any iOS devices like iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad.
!! Important: Disk Drill Media Recovery may not be able to see any disks (external and internal) on Mac OS X 10.8+ on the first run. Visit our knowledgebase for a quick solution: http://cleverfiles.com/ddmr
** Data protection **
Many users find Disk Drill's features for DMG backups extremely useful: save your data by creating a Disk Image (DMG) of any failing disk or partition for further data recovery, so you no longer need the original media. Later on, you can mount this Disk Image to your Mac and recover data from it.
Have you ever moved something to Trash, only to realize just moments after emptying it that… it was the only copy? Guaranteed Recovery comes to the rescue! Disk Drill Media Recovery adds the much needed "Recently Deleted" feature to your Mac, so you have some time to recover deleted items even when your Trash is emptied.
Disk Drill can also monitor your ATA, SATA and eSATA disks for hardware failures by polling the S.M.A.R.T. status of available hard drives.
** Extra features **
- Scanning session simple saving and loading
- Flexible filters for searching & sorting found files
- Live preview before scanning is complete
- Master password to prevent unauthorized access

After finding my USB drive had become corrupted, I remembered seeing a recent review of Clever Files' app Disk Drill. I went to the website and downloaded a trial of it to determine if it would recover the files and found that it did exactly what was advertised. I then got it off the Mac App Store (after reading the description and reviews) to find that it would not recognize my USB drive right off the bat. I contacted Clever Files about this issue and received a VERY quick reply as to where to go to install a patch that would allow this to work. After doing this, Disk Drill Media Recovery FLAWLESSLY recovered my files.
I do not work for Clever Files. But want to remind others in this review that limitations on what apps can do is due to the Mac App Store Sandboxing. This is not an issue with developers but with Apple. If you want to make sure apps have maximum security and minimal impact on your system, the Mac App Store is the way to go. But if you want full functionality of apps, the majority will have to be downloaded from developers websites.
I will give this app a full five stars for fulfilling it's promise (though with a small patch), quick response (thanks Kim!) and a great product. Thanks again!
Worked like it promised!
After browsing a few different Data Recover options to recover some unintentionally deleted photo sessions off my camera’s SD card, I came across this one. Lets give it a try. After weighing the options of $40 vs taking all those photos again it didn't sound so bad. I downloaded it. Opened the application and none of my drives were visible. “I just got screwed!” I thought to myself but then after quenching my initial anger I read the disclamer at the bottom that an OS 10 update file needed to be download separately due to Apples blah blah blah about hard drives. Downloaded that and restarted the app. BOOM! Minions search for my files!……. All is well in the land. I have my files, a clean pair of shorts and not having to come up with an explanation as to way I need to reshoot my session.
All in all a good product. Thank you.
One star for terrible customer service
I emailed customer support with a question and “Kim” replied, "Why would you purchase a completely different version and edition of Disk Drill after you completed a scan? The sessions in Disk Drill 2 and Disk Drill Media Recovery are not compatible. ….”
Not only did this have nothing to do with my problem at hand, it was , by far, the worst reply to a customer service request I have ever gotten.
According to their own site, Disk Drill basic is designed to scan and see if their is a chance of recovering what ever happens to be lost on a drive. So, I downloaded basic from their sight and allowed that program to scan. After seeing my files and being able to preview them, I then download Disk Drill Media recovery from the mac app store to do the actual recovery. Since the “recovery” button was greyed out, I wasnt sure if it needed to scan again, a process that took 24 hours the first time (lots of photos) So I emailed support to see if I could just start the recovery. I was then sent that reply.
