Very good program, you won
Location service is requered not by this program, but by iOS to access photos with geotag information. So this program asks for it not to know your location, but to access photos from camera roll (it's apple's idea to do it so). Anyway I saw some programs which just say that if your location service is off they couldn't write it for later use and continue working. So it can be a good idea to add this possibility to ignore location information.
And the program is realy good, it has almost everything you need to do with docs: make a photo, crop/resize, one of the best alorithms to make paper white and characters black, organize, send/save to various formats (jpg, pdf), sync (and automatic sync) with different services (google docs, evernote, mail...). And many other things which you can need.
The only thing not perfect is that some people may find procedure of scanning and organizing a little bit complicated (because it has a lot of settings and advantages), but it's still easy and may be in future author will make the design more straight forward.
The best image of several competitors
I wanted to know which of the major doc scanning apps would perform the best, so I took a picture of a document in Camera (iPhone 3G) and had several competitors each separately process the image. I then emailed the images to myself to compare them. The result? DocScanner produced the best image by a long shot. I was surprised at how different they were, since they all started with the exact same document image, but DocScanner was the best. The image had good contrast and was the easiest to read. It does make a difference which app you use if you want a quality image. That said, DocScanner is missing some features one might like and it did not find edges as well as some, though of course the corners can be moved to the edge of the document as needed.
I did not try OCR on the docs so I cannot comment on it except to say that good OCR requires good images and the better image produced by DocScanner would be an advantage.
For my part, add printing capability by integration with Print'n'Share and I can get rid of all my other scanning apps.
Took some practice, then quite nice.
The workflow took a bit for me to learn, but then it proved very useful. Pay attention to the "Document Type" -- I accidentally was using "Receipts" for everything and I was getting into trouble with full-page scans not having enough resolution. When I switched to "Mixed" it did great. Some people have questioned the OCR capability. I scanned a magazine article with text and photos, and had DocScanner automatically do OCR. The OCR data became part of the PDF, as it should be, and, thus, I can search the PDF for specific text strings. Worked great for this.
I have it automatically dump my PDF scans into a Dropbox folder so they appear on my Mac at home. All in all, this seems to be a quite powerful app with handy capabilities -- OCR, send to Dropbox, auto-alignment. Nice. When you get the hang of it, it can be part of a smooth scheme to handle your daily documentation needs.
