Virtual drive that can sync well to windows folders
I have been using Documents for 18-24 months. The specific capability that drives its use is mirroring windows folders onto the iPad. The network link of documents works beautifully to place a fully functioning folder in the windows file manager system by mapping the documents virtual drive. Has never failed yet. Then I use Goodsync to synchronize with a target windows folder so I have any type of document up to date and available. Working in medical sciences, I have folders of PDF files in particular that become your stack of references that now travels anywhere without the old piles of paper. For grant writing, protocol writing, Grant reviews, paper reviews - it makes an incredibly easy way to keep large amounts of written materials at your fingertips. I find the iPad pretty useless for authoring of course compared to any laptop, but writing on the laptop with reference materials in the iPad is simply brilliant. I probably use Documents 1-2 hours a day when in full academic mode. Couple it with synchronization and you have everything you need, anywhere you need it, any time you need it.
Perfect File Manager
As a file manager, Documents 5 has plenty of features, including syntax highlighting, file compression, drag&drop and music playback. It works smoothly and opens large files quickly.
Supports a wide variety of cloud services. You can also transfer files between local systems on the same network. Star, unzip and import photos and videos from the camera roll. Sending multiple files as email attachments or compressing them into a single zip file is as simple as a few taps.
You can save webpages and convert them to PDF. The internal web browser offers a reliable download manager too. Downloads take place in the background, so you don't have to stop working on other things while the app is downloading. The file viewer works perfectly too. Converting simple text files into rich-text format and highlighting PDF files are supported. The player allows you to rewind and fast forward the song. You can also shuffle and replay tracks. It supports background playback now.
If you're looking for a full-featured file viewer, file manager and downloader, then you came to the right place.
Most used app for years, a little finicky lately
I loooove and have used Readdle apps since I got my iPad (2 years). I sync my google calendars to Calendars, use their document scanner, and also use Documents with PDF Expert integrated.
Their apps form the core of what I use on my iPad. They are well designed and have great functionality and are almost always 5 stars. I'm updating my rating at least for now to 4, because since the 8.3 update Documents has been acting slower and generally being a little clunkier. I'm hoping that if there is an issue with this with 8.3, they'll get it resolved soon. This is occurring with 8.3 after a recent fresh restore/install of iOS 8 and after the upgrade to 8.3.
