Dominant Species for iPad

Welcome to a complete remake of Dominant Species, our first iPad app. This app is a digital port of one of our best-selling games, designed by Chad Jensen. Our original attempt at an app for this game was unfortunately less-than-stellar (to be kind). We knew we could do better, and we committed to making it better. Regrettably, it took us a long time - and three different developers - to finally create this new version. But at last we have an app that we are REALLY proud of. We hope you guys will like it, too, and find it a major improvement over the original game.
This new app update is an entirely new game with 100% new code, so you guys are getting a completely different app from the original. We are providing it as an “updated version” because that was the only way I could figure out to make sure that the owners of the original could get the new app for free. Please accept this as our apology that the original app wasn’t better, for the time it took us to get you the new version, and as a demonstration of our determination to never leave you stuck with a game that isn’t a quality product.
For you players who already play the Dominant Species boardgame, this app will allow you to have fun and practice your skills anytime, against a mix of human and computer AI opponents.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the boardgame, we provide context-sensitive explanations and a set of online rules to help you learn the game and get started quickly. You can also get help from us directly, via our Facebook page - which we are revamping to support the new version - at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dominant-Species-for-iPad/320893411343198. If you want to learn more strategy or have questions about general game play (not app-related), feel free to ask your questions on our Dominant Species page on BoardgameGeek: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/62219/dominant-species
Here's an updated feature list. Note that we are working on an additional update which will add multi-player Game Center support.
Play against a mix of up to 5 human and/or AI opponents via Solo Play, Pass 'N Play, or a combination of both.
A completely reworked User Interface that makes the game much easier to play
New Pull-Out visual menus that provide quick access to Tile Scoring, Speciation Values, Food Chain, and Dominance Cards.
All New Art from the new version of the boardgames
AI players that are greatly improved from the original version.
A new Undo feature
Autosave and Resume Game
Pinch to zoom and scroll
Color-coded dominance tracking
Finally, I want to personally thank all the great folks at GameTheory, who rewrote the entire app and gave us a product to be proud of. I also want to thank the people who volunteered to help us test Dominant Species, caught many bugs, and gave us great suggestions throughout. You guys did terrific work - thanks!
OK, enough talk. It’s time to play. Enjoy the game!
What's New in Version 2.0.1
I want to express our appreciation for all the support of our Dominant Species 2.0 launch! Thanks to your terrific feedback, we have a list of improvements planned. Today’s update is aimed mostly at bug fixes (like the unfortunate “Save Game” bug), but we’ve also added a few requested features as well. That will be our approach as we move forward with future updates - to tackle a bigger bug or “game is missing this” issue and then add to the update any additional feature upgrades that we have ready at the time. Next up for us will be adding a tutorial. We’ll keep you updated on our progress on the DS 2.0 Facebook page and get the tutorial out as a new update as soon as it’s ready.
For today, here’s what’s included in this v 2.01 update:
1. pause/play button for use during AI turns
2. OK button checkbox for those who don't want to tap OK for each popup (in Settings)
3. animation speed slider to make all animations faster or slower (in Settings)
4. original colors for Reptiles and Mammals
5. new Mountain terrain tile to see species icons more easily
6. random button to choose a random species from the choices available on player setup
7. end game scoring fixed
Enjoy the game!
Love the board game, and thought the original version of the app was fine. In 1.5 games in the new app, already run into numerous problems:
--As the game progresses, it will sometimes stop advancing. Pressing the checkmark to, for example, decide I'm done speciating does nothing. Only workaround is to force close and reopen the app.
--At the end of the first game, after a player took the Ice Age card, there was another turn and another player took the Ice Age card again. Obviously, this messed with the final scoring.
--Sometimes, in the execution phase, the game just skips over some markers.
I can't imagine playing the app again until these issues are fixed.
Fire design team
Fire the design team. SOooooooo much worse than the original version of this app that I don’t know where to begin. Thank goodness I knew how to play and love the game already as this version would be torture to try to learn from and would cause me to put it down and never play it again.
Bring back landscape.
Make the planning board readable without a microscope and make it not disappear through the execution phase. I can’t even see the terrain icons clearly enough on the planning board to recall the terrain I was attacking.
Let me see card counts again.
Could go on but overall VERY disappointed with the current version.
My first review on iTunes.
I love the board game, and loved the original app.
This version is far more difficult to use and does require a microscope for the planning board.
This was so disappointing to me that I don't even desire to play on this app and wish I had the original app.
Hopefully, this will be i,proved.
