Dragon Scales- A Game to Help Piano Students Learn Major and Minor Scales
By Luke Bartolomeo
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
Learn and practice the major and minor scales- at the same time you slay the dragon and steal his treasure!
Once upon a time...learning scales was a bore and a chore for piano students. But scales are such an important part of a student's development that they must be included as part of his or her study.
Dragon Scales will teach you about key signatures, the order of sharps and flats, and all of the major and minor scales. You can watch an instructional video on the scales you need to master and then challenge the fire-breathing dragon, Fuoco, to a duel as you fight your way to his treasure and steal it. But watch out! If you take too long or miss a note…you're toast!
Dragon Scales features:
• Fully customizable. Drill the specific scales that you choose.
• Comprehensive. Choose from all major and minor keys, including harmonic, melodic, and natural minors.
• Challenging. As your abilities improve, increase the attack speed of the dragon and rack up even more points!
• Instructional. Over an hour of instructional videos are included in the app with no additional purchase (internet connection required). Learn about the order of sharps and flats, the circle of fifths, the relationship between major and minor keys, and the specific notes of any particular scale.
*** Students preparing for the Royal Conservatory of Music Examinations (Canada) or the assessments of the Music Development Program (USA) will find that the specific scale requirements for each grade level are available as presets. A single tap will enable all of the scales that could be requested on your next examination.
All of these features are included in the price of a single download. There are NO in-app purchases to unlock additional features or content. Buy the app once and continue to learn from it as you progress.
What's New in Version 1.1
Improved compatibility and performance with iOS 8
I recently purchased this app for my iPad but found there was no sound. I learned that you need to be sure the mute button is not on. Even though my button was set for screen lock and not mute, I had to go into settings, reassign the button to take it off mute. Now my sound works! I am excited to try this with my students!
Please update to reflect the new 2015 Syllabus Technical requirements! Before, I loved recommending this app to my students, but now the level settings don't match.
Also, it would be nice to see new "endings" or rewards as students advance through the levels (it becomes predictable with the same reactions from the dragon, and the fun wears off).
It is so fun to watch my students' eyes fill with fear and trepidation when they have to learn their scales!
No, really, this does make scales less intimidating and more fun. 😊
