please update me!
Oh how I would love an update for DroneFX! The mixer interface is simply wonderful, and if I could put custom samples in and get audio out through Audiobus or even Inter-App Audio, this app would have everything I need it to have. MIDI would be a plus, but maybe just extra-chord tones on the keyboards would do. Even with nothing but chord notes to work with, the mixer is surprisingly flexible while remaining pretty to look at and easy as pie to operate.
As-is, DroneFX is still one of my favorite ambient dedicated sound composition apps. Lots of samples come with it and it is easy to change them up using the timing and envelope controls. I will use it till my iPad refuses to light up for me anymore. Recording through audio out is not the worst thing to have to do, but I would like to be able to capture inspiration even while trapped under all the cats.
I would not change a thing about the interface. Absolutely worth the download with or without it, but some interconnection would be swell.
A fatal flaw dooms it...
The app, overall, is pretty decent. A great selection of instruments, good sound, and an easy enough interface that even allows non-musicians free reign to create...
HOWEVER, there is a fatal flaw.
When you insert a new instrument, you choose it from a list- and when you click on the new instrument, the sound IMMEDIATELY plays, loudly, with no attack or fade-in.
This makes it impractical to play on-the-fly or for an audience, since your playback is being constantly interrupted by an intrusive "sample" of sound, whenever you want to change instruments.
The only work-around, apparently, is to save your instruments to your favorites, and then insert them, as the selection of your favorites does not cause the app to play an intrusive "sample" that disrupts the flow of music.
I am sincerely hoping that the creators of the app are reading this, because I'll be glad to bump up my star rating, and give a more positive review, when they fix this annoying, glaring fault in what otherwise is a solid app. (Protip: add a 'play' button next to the instrument in the selection list. This will give the user the option to hear the sound, or just select it, without hearing an unwanted sound in their composition.)
Great Ambient Music Creator!
Drone FX has to be one of the best ambient music creators I have found (and I have well over 70+ music apps). Within minutes, I was creating some really amazing background music.
The layout was simple and I was able to figure it out without even going to the Help section. The more I played around with it, the more impressed I was. Especially with the number and quality of sounds packed into this.
It worked wonderfully as a super easy to use generative music app, but once I discovered all of the options I could manipulate and the keyboards for each of the 5 instruments (which are AWESOME), I realized how powerful it was. I literally couldn't put it down for a couple hours.
This is the perfect addition to the music app arsenal for anyone interested creating ambient and background music.
Great job! I can't wait to use it in some projects I am working on.
