Description

Introducing DropKey. The hassle-free way to encrypt your files.

We all send a lot of files. Whether it's in Mail, with iChat, or even sharing them in Dropbox, files are still a huge part of our daily lives. Sadly, we haven't had an easy way to make sure they can only be opened by the people they were intended for.

Until now.

Building on state-of-the-art encryption standards, DropKey quickly and easily encrypts any file specifically for your recipients — without the need for a password or the hassle of juggling a bunch of keys!

Public Key Infrastructure is an amazing system for creating and maintaining a system of trust between senders and recipients. Once this relationship has been established, it's just a matter of "baking" the shared keys into the encrypted file. It's a great standard, but few of us mortals were able to figure out a way to make it work for us.

We believe security shouldn't be complicated. We built DropKey with this philosophy, and we we think it shows. It's built with you in mind, relying on common apps like Address Book and Mail, rather than some crazy proprietary database or ridiculous setup wizard. DropKey is designed to be simple to use, because you should work hard to create great files, not to secure them.

Give DropKey a try today. You'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Buggy

I saw this application featured on TUAW this morning and decided to give it a try. I'm sad to say that it's way too buggy for general use. I'm giving DropKey 3 stars for now because of the potential it has to become something incredibly useful. I really like the idea behind it, but in it's current form it's pretty useless. Being a 1.0 release, I was expecting at least the major bugs to have been fixed, but this feels more like an early beta than a 1.0 version. Too bad, but at least it was free! I'm keeping an eye on this one for updates, if the developers get it working correctly, it will easily be worth 5 stars.

Only works on a Mac

. . . and the people I would send encrypted files to have Windows PCs. For me, fail.

I understand why the receiving side would need DropKey to do the authentication/verification back to your Mac, but I would like an option to send encrypted files without the recipient having to also use DropKey. Perhaps they could implement authentication based solely on having my public key, or maybe establish a DropKey web service authentication to unlock or decrypt a file for someone lacking a computer with Dropkey installed?

Also, my "me" card contains private information, and I use a different card for my vCard. I could not test this app, so I cannot say whether or not it will allow me to designate a different vCard, but I will need to be able to do that before I can use DropKey.

I could not test it, so I just gave it 3 stars. I will leave it installed on my Mac for now, and see if a future update makes it usable for someone in my situation.

Did not create the keys as was supposed to.

I really liked the idea behind this crypto app, seemed like a simplified PGP for mac. However, upon install, the program did not create the keys as it was supposed to, it displays a blank when key manager is chosen, sends a weird file when sending public key insteas of .ics.
Too bad, as I was really looking forward to it :(

EDIT:
In a matter of minutes, their support contacted me and helped me solve my problem. It now works perfectly!
