With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

Effective when properly used!

I started using DuoLingo when I decided to learn Dutch and German to accompany my german studies in school. Now, I'm learning Danish, German, Korean, Czech and even just playing around and picking up on some Swahili. I really, REALLY can't express how much I love DuoLingo as a program. Now, I must say the app is not as "full featured" as the website. The web version is FAR superior to this app and I definitely prefer to learn on the web vs. the application. If you're starting a brand new language, the application is not the best place to tackle that. The website offers so much more including detailed explanations about pronunciation and grammar, as well as a timed mode which I actually really like. The app is useful, but I don't think it should be used for full time learning. It's good for when you want to practice or pick up a new lesson on the go when you have a few minutes to do so. Many people expect much more, and they're not satisfied with their results because they're not using DuoLingo how it should be experienced.

As for the stupid health system, that's another story. That doesn't exist in the web either, but I really dislike it here in the app. When learning a language, you should expect to make mistakes, and punishing you 1/5 hearts every time is a bit much, especially when the lessons can be lengthy.

Either way, the app is solid, but shouldn't be the only way you use the program.

Duolingo is 💣

It’s the only free language service I’ve found. I’m loving learning Italian on here and if I can ever afford it, I have the option to pay for it to stop ads and keep learning in the same system that I’ve grown to love. There’s so much variety in how they test your knowledge. You really have to pay attention and I personally take notes like it’s a class because they won’t let you put the wrong word even when it’s the right word in the wrong tense. I appreciate the accuracy and I think the whole set up is great. The only thing it’s lacking is a background on why the words are the way they are. It would be easier(and I don’t know how they would integrate this) if they told us- oh, verbs have six forms. I drink: Io bevo. You drink: Tu bevi. He/She drinks: Lui/Lei beve. They drink: Loro bevono. We drink: Noi beviamo. You all drink: Voi bevete. There’s no one to tell you, and you have to notice these patterns and remember them. Good news is, they’re linear and that structure works for a lot of them. I eat/drink/read/write: Io mangio/bevo/leggo/scrivo. And so on: We eat/drink/read/write: Noi mangiamo/beviamo/leggiamo/scriviamo. So it’s great that I notice these patterns, but maybe there are a few who don’t catch on and get frustrated and quit. Maybe a little more explanation could be added in. And then even though I can figure it out, I won’t have to on my own and others will have a clearer path. All together though, I love this app and I appreciate it so much.
