Great App, Needs Moderation

I would like to start off by saying that this is such a great app. I took five years of French in high school, but was looking to expand upon that knowledge before I continued taking it my Freshman year of college. Duolingo has been such a great way of doing that and has taught me a lot after only a week of using it. Yet despite its strong advantages, there have been some major flaws I have been unable to look past, some of which I may not have even noticed if I was not already partially familiar with the French language. The majority of the time I have seen problems arise is during the matching portion, where you must match the English definition to the French definition. Often times these definitions are wrong (ex, making me match allemand to blanches because they are the only two words remaining..) and sometimes are a bit confusing (blanche=white balls?) Other times, the app incorrectly marks my answer for the translation portion as wrong even though I answered with a correct synonym for a verb that the app has even given as a definition itself. The more I use this albeit great app, the more and more I am noticing these errors, and they are becoming rather distracting. It is for this reason that I am forced to give this great app a mere three stars. I encourage the developers to fix such errors to make the app a better experience for users, less their users learn some part of a language incorrectly.

Can't beat the price

I have used Duolingo every day for three+ months, working on two different languages. One is a language with which I have a good deal of experience; the other is one with which I had some experience more than 25 years ago. For my stronger language, it is an excellent way to review and supplement what I already know. For my weaker language, it is fine as part of a broader strategy (using other resources too) but wouldn't be enough on its own to help me become truly good.

You don't want to take the levels too seriously. I am supposedly halfway through both the skills "tree" and the levels for my weaker language and can in theory recognize nearly half of all words in that language relative to their usage rate, but there is no way that is true. Meanwhile, I am two-thirds of the way to the maximum level in my stronger language, but have long since completed the skills "tree." It is however a very useful tool, overall, especially as part of a multifaceted approach. If you use it, be nice to the moderators; they work hard!

Couldn't be happier!

I had been searching for a relatively cheap app that would effectively serve as a sort of "check up" on my French skills in-between lessons, and to hone on my skills during classes. When I found Duolingo, I couldn't be happier. Since I already had a background in French, testing out of what I already had nailed (per se) was an excellent option. Being able to still review those lessons was even better. It even inspired me to start learning a new language -- Italian, just randomly drawn from a hat, really. I began studying, and since I already had experience in learning a new language, I learned quickly and became rather obsessed - having a book of conjugations, making flash cards for the vocabulary...and just a short time later, ended up moving to Italy. As cheesy as it sounds, my whole life changed when I started using this FREE and COMPLETE language learning app. I could not be happier and thank everyone that put the time, effort and skill into this app. Thank you.
