Phenomenal and fun!

Having learned a language or two in classrooms, and looked around online for ways to learn new ones, and having been too broke to try the pricey options like Rosetta Stone, I am thrilled with this app! I like the interaction and the simplicity, I have tried almost every language offered and am anxiously awaiting some of the upcoming language offerings. The only things I have noticed that might be considered problematic are small, in the grand scheme. For example: isn't the language spoken in Ireland (besides English) called Gaelic? And isn't Gaelic also spoken in Scotland? And why aren't the individual words in the "Irish" language learning game pronounced for the learner the way they are in the other languages? And finally, why is the app telling my kids that they are "10% fluent!" In the language they are learning when they have learned maybe 50 words. That is mathematically unsound. I understand the desire to encourage them, I applaud the exposure that this app is allowing, I am playing it all the time and really love it (5 stars is not something I give lightly!) but there were just a few little fiddly details that were bothering me, an easy fix. Thank you for making this app! I think it would be a great addition to any language learning class in school as well as fun for lifelong learners.

German noun gender issue

Overall, I really like this app and have learned a ton. The only issue that I have at this point is the fact that the app does not help me learn the nouns’ genders. In German it is important to know the genders of the nouns but the only time the gender is given is right when the noun is initially taught for the first time. It would be great if every time a noun was reviewed during a lesson, that its article would also be given so as to reinforce the nouns’ genders more effectively. It is just frustrating getting a question wrong because I write “eine” instead of “ein” even when the noun itself is correct. This is much less of an issue in the online version of Duolingo because you can hover over the word and it tells the gender but that is not an option in the iOS app. This is mostly an issue in the lessons where you are told to match various words from English to German, or when a certain word is given in either English or German and you are told to pick the translation from three choices. I understand that this issue is probably only relevant when learning German, but I think it could be useful in learning any language that has gendered nouns.

Love the App, Could be Better

This app honestly is nothing short of fantastic. I love the graphics and visual design, the effectiveness of the lessons though, I can't speak to. I have been learning French mostly through this program alone and I have to say, it definitely has taught me a few words and phrases but my MAJOR CRITICISM is that it completely invalidates your ability to learn with certain exercises. Mainly in the word choice exercises, it presents you with a problem of knowing English grammar more than knowing the language you're learning. If you want me to figure out what words to where to form the sentence "Her robe was black" and I'm learning possessives, capitalizing the first letter of the correct choice does takes away the struggle and satisfaction of figuring it out, or getting it wrong. Obviously, the word that is capitalized should be first. Also, don't just offer me one option to choose from for what the correct word is, throw more incorrect possessives in there! You can't learn if the only wrong options are words you obviously wouldn't use! Make the answers less obvious, and you make the whole thing more effective, in my opinion.
