Yeah, it's pretty sweet.
What's New in Version 4.6.4
Bug fixes and performance improvements.
Duolingo is the best, most useful app that I have ever had the pleasure of using in my entire life. It was a significant part in getting me conversant in Spanish, which will without a doubt become a useful tool later in life. Many thanks to Duolingo and I definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to learn a language!
Duolingo's teaching method is simple, and effective. Each 2-3 minute lesson teaches you about five words, and you can review lessons whenever you like. You can also friend people and compete against them to see who does the most lessons over a week or month.
However, I will admit that some of the courses are better-made than others. While the Spanish, French, and German courses are high quality, others, such as the Irish one, lack numerous facets and grammatical points.
Overall, I recommend Duolingo for anyone who wants to learn a second language, regardless of how much motivation you have.
Easy and engaging
This definitely feels like the "cleanest" app I've tried for learning languages. The functionality is smooth and intuitive, and the gamification aspect makes you want to keep going. I think it does a good job of gradually introducing concepts and focusing on the basics first. If you really want to understand a language and not just memorize basic phrases then this is the app for you.
The one thing I'd caution is that this is NOT a good crash course for learning useful phrases. The focus is on structure and vocab which often results in practicing nonsense phrases like "the spider eats sugar" or "I am a horse". It requires a little patience and faith in the beginning, but after some time you will get to the point where you are actually understanding and creating sentences instead of just memorizing them.
Fantastic! With minor drawbacks...
I took a Spanish class in high school and can retain very little from it. But Duolingo in just a few short days has taught me a large amount of basic Spanish termonology and I am able to recant it extremely well! I learned Hebrew most of my life and intend to strengthen my vocab using Duolingo. I CANNOT WAIT for Hebrew to be released in a few weeks!!!! The only improvements I would love to see is the ability to set seperate goals for seperate languages, as I will be learning Spanish alongside Hebrew. Also, the ability to turn off notifications per language not all together. Basically, more independent statistics and functionality between languages to make learning multiple languages have more distinguishable goals.
