Description

The Kansas City Star's eStar lets you read the newspaper on your mobile device just as it appears in print. You can flip through the pages and skim the headlines of Missouri's leading source for local news. The app allows you to easily enlarge type, jump from section to section, and share articles on Facebook with the tap of a finger. And if you missed the paper one day, don’t worry. As a subscriber, you can download editions from the past 14 days.

No longer lets you email an article easily

Jadwin

Latest update: Unfortunately, we have to downgrade again, to “unusable.” Adjacent pages block viewing of articles; screen taps don’t work; sending an email of s page kicks you out to your email program after sending. And, the spam ad for the Quicken guy is just obnoxious. Update: downgrading to zero stars because of random app slowdowns and unpredictable responses to screen taps. Now it doesn’t use the default mail app, as all news apps do, but makes you type in your email address and the recipients in an awkward form. Also, all pages are now cluttered with giant arrows in case the user doesn’t recall how to swipe pages. And, when you zoom in, the text gets less legible. It also includes terrible in-line ads now that seem better suited to a tabloid; the one that popped up today when Intried to email an article was “10 ugliest dog breeds.” This does not happen when you read the prints version and since we are paying for both’ why does the Star allow these pop-ups when you click on a story?

TERRIBLE

this is the worst version os this app ever. I have interrupted reading the sunday paper just to write this out of frustration. The replica view makes the paper so big that the arrows to change pages on the left and right of the screen overlap the writing! You either have to double-tap to go to the article or squeeze down every single page. There is a pop-up ad at the bottom of every edition when you open it that has to be closed by clicking an X. I pay for this subscription and should not have to close unwanted ads that are not part of the actual news paper.

Huge Downgrade

The old KC Star app was really great - navigating was easy, zooming in on articles intuitive, and it was overall a really pleasant way to read the newspaper. The new UI on this app is like going back in time to when websites looked like crap. The navigational tabs actually cover content (and no, making them semi transparent doesn't make the stuff underneath any more readable) and you can no longer zoom in on a single article. The menu of sections on the side is so much clunkier than the old navigation at the top. Overall I'm very disappointed.
