Saved my life. Financially anyway.
Last April (2014), my church went through financial peace university, which was totally awesome except for the part where Dave Ramsay wanted us to use physical cash for every purchase and keep it all in dedicated envelopes. I HATE carrying cash, and I spend it far more quickly than using my card. I also have money in like 7 different account (my main checking and savings are with USAA which doesn't have any branches near me, so I also have a local account just to deposit cash). Good budget helps me keep track of everything, and it's soooo easy! Unlike Mint, where you have to give them access to your accounts and logins and passwords, and hope you don't forget about that check you wrote to a friend that they still haven't cashed, GoodBudget is entirely manual. I actually really love this because it keeps me involved with my money because I can't leave it on autopilot and forget about it.
I do subscribe to it: it's only $40 a YEAR, and it gives me so much more flexibility. Unpaid, you get only 10 envelopes and one account. It's a great way to test the service, but not useful long term, unless you only have cash, nothing in the bank. I have 12 accounts set up including ones for food stamps, PayPal, my Etsy account (I sell online there), and my car note. I have 20 envelopes.
Trust me, just get this app. Do the setup on a computer: it's just easier.
Best decision ever!
In April of 2013 I estimated my income, created a budget, took some money out of savings and lived off last months income (accruing new income with which to create a new every penny allocated budget). I haven't looked back. I use the subscription level account so that I can use Goodbudget to balance all of my bank accounts (checking, credit card that gets paid off every month, savings accounts). I even got my sister to do the same thing. She used an income tax refund to start the live off last months income process. We recently upgraded our house. I couldn't have done it all without the Goodbudget tool to manage my money (instead of it managing me). My favorite features include: real time updates to envelopes so my hubby and I are always in synch, the progress bar that helps you make decisions on if I should really go out to eat or not, easy imports/balancing of all of my bank accounts. I couldn't live without this app. Goodbudget is AWESOME SAUCE!!!!
Features I've been looking for
I've tried so many budgeting tools before and there are some good ones. This had a few features that I've been begging from the other companies. The fact that I can budget around a twice a month pay system but also that I can change the payment dates to reflect that, is great! I can project my bill withdrawals and set my budget so that I see what I can actually spend each pay period. I haven't had it long but so far, it's great.
I'm a tech guy so I've always liked the tools that do the work of data entry for me. This doesn't but I've found that manually entering each transaction is a discipline that keeps my budget before my thoughts. Before, I'd get used to the budget importing transactions and eventually forget to look at the budget because I knew it was doing its thing. The issue with that is, "doing its thing" had become about getting the data in rather then about helping me spend well.
