Learn to read and write the Thai alphabet the easy way with this app. It is especially helpful for people learning the Thai language at beginner or intermediate level.
All schemes for writing Thai words in English letters are a compromise and can only be approximate. To help with understanding the language it is far better if you are able to learn to read the letters of new words in the original Thai.
Learning the Thai alphabet is also helpful when travelling around Thailand for business or pleasure. With a little practice you should be able to read simple words like road signs, bus destinations, restaurant menus and the like.
Learning Thai numbers as well might even save you a little money when shopping in Thailand. Sometimes the lowest prices are only written in Thai.
The best way to learn a new alphabet is to practice writing it. Using your hands as well as your eyes will help you to recall the shape of each letter more quickly.
The app includes a set of exercises for the letters, numbers and tone marks used in written Thai. There's also an area to practice writing the letters and numbers yourself. Your writing is saved on your iPad so that you can close the program and return to it later where you left off.
Audio samples of each of the letters and numbers are included to help with learning the correct pronunciation.
Includes "Test Yourself" feature to test how well you can recall the letters and numbers.
Updated to improve compatibility with latest iOS versions.
Ratings and Reviews
This is a useful app for learning to write and recognize Thai script. In the exercises, I wish you could go directly to a letter you want to check out by tapping on it in the main exercises menu rather than having to flip through all the letters for that exercise set to get there. It would also be cool to be able to test yourself on an exercise set rather than on all the consonants, vowels, etc. at once. if a spaced repetition setting were also in place for the self testing to make sure you review the letters you're weak on this app would be phenomenal. Overall I'm happy with it; by using this app along with the book 60 Minutes to Learn the Thai alphabet I've made a lot of progress. I'll also give props to the developer of this app, who responded quickly and helpfully when I had a question.
For 1.99 this a decent little app, but it could be better. I'd really love to see some more repetition, practice and testing to make sure you can identify script letters.
As it stands, you'll have to do all the repetition yourself by doing the exercises over and over again.
Given that there's nothing else out there yet, this is worth getting until something with more features comes out. It's more reference than education....
No audio sound
It would be nice to have Sound to pronounce each character for better understanding. Could it be unfinished app or don't work with iPad Air 2.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
