Eclipse Safari is your comprehensive interactive guide to the August 21 2017 Total Solar Eclipse of the Sun, visible along a narrow path spanning the USA from the West coast to the East coast. It's a free app developed by the makers of the award-winning SkySafari 5 astronomy app in collaboration with Space.com, the premier source of eclipse and space news.

Here is what you can do with Eclipse Safari:

Clunky app, map function nearly useless

Oppressed Bia

While the concept is great, the interactive map is trash.
The location search function might find the location, but does not drop a pin, which is the whole point with how this map works. If my current location is 100 miles away from the path of totality and I want to check if a specific address is located within the path, I can't.
The map is too small within the app. It covers less than 1/3 of the screen and still requires pinching and finger scrolling to move around. Oops, I dropped a pin 1000 miles away from where I'm planning to be.
The tiny map lacks details such as road names.
I can't even speak to the quality of the rest of the app since the interactive map is so awful, but it looks like it's just a copy of a (not great looking) website.

Developer Response

Hi Oppressed Bia, Thank you for the review. We've added the option to expand the map. User feedback is invaluable in making our apps better. You can tap anywhere on the eclipse path map to drop a location pin. After you search for a specific location (city), you can tap to drop a pin and set your new location. You can zoom in to road level and see road names but please note that because of the finite resolution of the eclipse path data, the pin might be dropped a few hundred feet away (all the maps available do this). Eclipse details will not be affected. We also invite you to join our Eclipse Safari community forums. Please post any new queries or further app feedback into a NEW post in the community forums here: www.AstronomySupport.com >>> Community Forums >>> Eclipse Safari | Interactive 2017 Total Solar Eclipse Guide (forum). Developers will reply there where the community can also help and/or learn from our experience. Thanks again, your feedback will be submitted to our development team.

Excellent Eclipse App

idonotwanttohaveanickname

This is an excellent eclipse app. You can drop pins on a location and see the total eclipse duration, when the eclipse starts, the start of totality, maximum eclipse, the end of totality and the end of the eclipse. A nice addition would be a button to get you the current weather for where you put your pin or a button to get a weather forecast for where you put your pin. The simulations of the eclipse from where you dropped your pin are nice. It would be good if the simulation could be saved or watched as a movie. This app will help me set up my intervalometer to take pictures of the eclipse. Let’s hope we have clear skies.

Great and useful app

Sylvester the odd

I'm very impressed with this app. The interactive map lets you figure out where the best spot to observe the eclipse is. Even if you can't make it into the region of totality, it will show you what the eclipse will look like from your location.

Lots of general information about the eclipse. Highly recommended.
