Full of creative snobs...
This is the third time I am writing a review regarding my experience on Ello. I am beginning to think that my review of Ello is being censored.
At any rate, I was on Ello initially for almost 3 years - possibly more. In that time, I garnered maybe eighty followers. That’s right: 80. I have more followers and engagement on the dog eat dog environment of Instagram than I ever had on Ello.
Eventually, it became apparent to me that the only people that would get any real recognition or inclusion on the platform are people that Ello chooses to be noticed. In other words, once again, it’s who you know - not what you can do.
In many ways, I found my experience on Ello like being in high school all over again. Except, in this instance, the popular clique, being comprised of the art room kids, have somehow taken over the school.
If I were my high school self, I would celebrate such an occurrence. However, my current wiser and older self resists elitism and artistic snobbery - which is what Ello is all about. So, if you’re looking for a supportive and encouraging community where you feel empowered and have a real voice, Ello is not it. In many ways, Ello is the epitome of one hand clapping.
So much potential, but...
Before they add new features we need the developers to fix the most common bugs that prevent the consumer from using the app. For example: When submitting a picture on your profile and then writing a caption under it, every time you type the picture jumps up and down like crazy. Another example: When I try to add a link inside my post (very cool feature btw), I type a word then select it then click the link button. I then paste the URL I want and that’s it. I can’t click any buttons or anything. The only way to proceed is to force quit the app. There are a ton other bugs that aren’t as preventing. Keep up the good work!
Good idea, horrible app
I love the idea of Ello as a platform for creatives, and the design and layout of everything is on point. However, the app is the buggiest thing I’ve ever used. When trying to type a bio on my profile for example, I couldn’t type a single word without it randomly deleting or adding a space and jumbling up my letters. Also, I just tried 20 times to upload a picture, but it kept crashing before it would let me. For an app that depends on user content, this is a death knell bug. Another annoying thing: you can’t edit the description of a picture once you’ve posted it... come on. Do better. At least make the app enjoyable to use.
