The story, puzzles and games are excellent - much more intellectually challenging and satisfying than the merely "pretty" or "spooky" games that are too prevalent. I agree with another reviewer who said that the Enigmatis series, the Drawn series and a few others are the very top tier of these type of games. Almost all the rest are 3 stars at best because of silly or boring stories, simple, formulaic games/puzzles and/or mediocre production values. This, OTOH, is an A-1 game in all those respects (except for some minor quibbles).
I'm knocking off half a star for some fairly minor, but irritating, problems. The map isn't that useful, the navigating buttons are a bit inconsistent (sometimes there's a 'Back' button, other times you have to close the scene at top right 'X', compass didn't always work, etc.), the sound was bad a few times (music drowning out voice each time the prisoner was telling his story), somewhat choppy scene changes and controls, there was no gender choice for the detective, and a few other minor technical irritants.
Regardless of these minor criticisms, I highly recommend this game, I'll buy any game from this studio (Artifex Mundi sp?) and I'll be replaying this one again.
This is definitely one of my favorite Big Fish games of all times. I've been sampling games for over the past two years now but I rarely buy the full games because of the price and my lack of interest. For this game, however, I was immediately hooked. Since I've been playing for quite a while, I developed a criteria that helps me decide whether I should pay $7 for a game: plot line, 'tap' ease; and HO scenes.
Firstly, the plot line is pretty good. If you are a fan of fantasy and the occult and you don't mind long cutscenes, then this one surely passes the test. Secondly, it is easy to navigate through scenes. In order to move from one location to the next, you need to tap the arrow twice -- this way, you don't 'accidentally' go to another place. Lastly, the HO do not make you squint at the screen in search for an unreasonable hidden object. Though challenging, the scene is devised in a way to be entertaining and engaging rather than frustrating.
Before I write the rest of this, I was just thinking that I REALLY WISH that Big Fish would add to the descriptions of the games they PUBLISH ONLY the name of the company who CREATED the app in the first place!!!
I've had this game since the first day or two when it was released in the App Store by publisher Big Fish. I only recently got around to it and I have to say; I have REALLY become a fan of Artifex Mundi games. This one sealed it! These guys and gals really put together TOP notch games and they just keep getting better. The graphics are great, the voice acting is wonderful, it's a great story, very well rounded with all the elements a real story should have. The bonus game in this one was somewhat different and a neat idea. This time instead of simply adding what really should be the REAL ending of a story like a lot of these so called collector's edition games or worse no bonus game at all, this time you're following up with a victim of the crime, how this character landed in the lap of evil in the first place.
It certainly left a great impression and definitely left me wanting MORE!!!
What an amazing team you guys must have there at A.M!
And, thank you for providing a VERY entertaining game that I won't soon forget!
