Eschalon: Book I is a classic role-playing game experience that will take you across massive outdoor environments and deep into sprawling dungeons as you seek to uncover the mystery of who - or what - you are.
Featuring hundreds of items, creatures, and locations, Eschalon is a tile-built, turn-based game world where the result of absolutely every action is rolled, calculated or statistically determined. A non-linear storyline means that the game world is open to explore as you desire. Follow the storyline or don't...it's up to you.

Why is this game good?
I've played Baldur's gate, and many other old school RPG's. I like this game a lot. If you know how to develop characters it is a lot easier on you. I would recommend getting the alchemy skill and developing it. You can then make your own potions and keep your character juiced up during a tough spot. Also, make sure you do side quests so you find more loot, and chances to gain XP.
Develop the mercantile skill as well and you won't be spending all of your gold trying to stay alive. You will get better prices on the items you purchase at the stores, and you will also get more gold for the loot that you sell.
The only thing that I thnk could make this game better is if it was a party based game rather than one character.
Sometimes the game play can get a little choppy, but it's not awful.
Once I finish, I will definitely buy the second installment of this series. It is the only game I have found that really fills the void I have been looking for in RPG character development and the world is a lot more open than some other RPG titles I have played on the marketplace.
I haven't spent a lot of time on Avenum, but it is so watered down from the Exile series.
I seriously wish they would put Exile on the marketplace, that game is my favorite party based RPG I have ever played.
So, it is good because… You can really enjoy developing a character, there are tons of items, you can create items, and there are a lot of skills to be developed.
Fair old school RPG, but the gameplay could be better.
I generally like old-school RPGs, but after a few hours of playing, this one just feels mediocre. The story proresses a little too slowly, and the early part of the game becomes tedious; hours spent hunting salamanders and looking for things to complete side-quests for people in town are not the most exciting. The rewards, at least in the beginning of the game, come a bit two slowly. I played a ranger, and ended up spending mst of my gold on arrows (ranged hit probabilities seem very low/lots of hits with no damage). It takes a bit too long to level, given the very modest increases to character abilities at level up. Gameplay isn’t terrible, but it feels a little rough around the edges. It would be nice to be able to use the arrow keys or number pad for movement. Keyboard shoutcuts are not immediately obvious, and ther are no tooltips when hovering over an icon.
I got this game, and I didn't know what I was doing. This game doesn't tell you how to control it. But once I got into it, it was a great game, and it kept me occupied for the long car rides (when I'm not driving of course!) I really like role-playing games, and it was great on my MacBook Air. This game is hard and unforgiving, so if you're new to games like Baldur's Gate, don't play this! You probably won't get very far. When I beat this game (if I ever do), I will definitely be getting Book II, if I can. Great game, but even at the beginning of the game, it's very easy to die. If you get into the swing of things though, it'll still be quite hard, but you'll know the basics of survival in the world of the Eschalon series. I hope you get it if you are up for the challenge!
