Worst App I Own
I love ESPN and their sports coverage but this app is horrendous. ESPN clearly cares nothing about this app which is odd because they advertise streaming their shows all the time on TV. The App is so slow. When you open the app, you have to wait about 8 seconds for it fully open. Everything you do on the app (scrolling, selecting articles, viewing scores, etc.) there’s about a 3 second delay before the app processes what you did. Even notifications come in about 30 minutes after other sports apps have sent them to me. (DISCLAIMER: the issues are absolutely not my phone. I’m pretty tech savvy and everyone I know has the same issues) Used to be a go to app but now that I have bleacher report and can listen to the podcast on Apple podcast, I never use it. I read some where that espn just links the app to their website so it just try’s to pull things from the website which is why it’s so slow (not sure it is true but I’ve been trying to figure out why it’s so bad and that explanation made sense). I wish they would make a dedicated app. All-in-all, the app is awful. I’m not sure how the app has 4.2 stars. From what I can tell, not many people have reviewed the app since the update that killed it. I wish more people would come do a review because I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t have bad things to say about the app. If they don’t review the app it will never get fixed but oh well.
Developer Response ,
Hi! Thanks for letting us know about the crash. We've recently released a new version of the app with performance improvements, and a complete redesign. So definitely make sure you get the update, and let us know about your experience. Your feedback is always welcome, and helps us fix these kinds of things when they happen. Thanks, The ESPN App Team
Has potential but too buggy
There are things I do like about this app - it’s easy to follow all your favorite teams, you can watch videos, it updates in real time. But unfortunately the benefits are not outweighed by the annoyances.
The biggest (and until today, only) complaint I have is the incessant notifications. I know how to set notifications settings through my phone and the app, it is not an issue of ignorance. I’ve set the strictest settings I could, so I *should* only get a push notification when the two NFL teams I follow score points. Instead, I get constant notifications about random news from the NFL and MLB (the two leagues in which I have tagged favorite teams). I have tried turning of “Team News” and every other notification setting except the one for points being scored by my NFL teams. Nothing has worked. Eventually I just disabled notifications entirely for that app in the phone’s settings, which almost defeats the point of having it for me.
The latest issue is a recurring error message telling me to check my internet connection. Nothing on the app will work, despite me having internet access. The pop up just comes up over and over again as I hit “retry” in vain. I do hope they fix these issues so I can use the app again. Until then, it gets two stars from me.
Much better looking but flawed...
ESPN app has gotten better. Better lay out and easier to use to an extent. The ESPN+ feature/subscription is not. I have all my Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID. yet he ESPN TVOS app does not play content. Any of it. I can select something I want to watch but when I click “watch”. Nothing happens. It is signed in with my ESPN sign on info, just like my phone yet they seem to be operating independently of each other. The TVOS app must have signed itself out recently because I opened it last night to watch a 30for30 and I had to “subscribe” all over again. I had already done that a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t found much to complain about in the iOS version and I end up having to use AirPlay to stream content from my phone to Apple TV instead of just being able to play it directly through the TVOS version and that’s a drag. It doesn’t always work well, quits if I get a call while streaming and often gives me a hard time just getting something to start playing. I hope you all figure out what’s going on with the TVOS versions and fix it soon. Thanks. For now, 2 stars. I don’t want to sit in my living room and watch ESPN on my phone with my 65” tv dormant in front of me. Pretee dorky.
