Science writer Carl Zimmer and evolutionary biologist Douglas Emlen have teamed up to write a textbook intended for biology majors that will inspire students while delivering a solid foundation in evolutionary biology.
Zimmer brings the same story-telling skills he displayed in The Tangled Bank, his 2009 non-majors textbook that the Quarterly Review of Biology called “spectacularly successful.”
Emlen, an award-winning evolutionary biologist at the University of Montana, has infused Evolution: Making Sense of Life with the technical rigor and conceptual depth that today’s biology majors require.
Students will learn the fundamental concepts of evolutionary theory, such as natural selection, genetic drift, phylogeny, and coevolution.
What's New in Version 1.4.1
iOS 5 bug fixes
I do not normally write reviews, but considering I spent so much money on the full version of this book only to get a buggy experience at best; you can believe I'm writing one now. This book should have been published though iBooks in my opinion. The user interface is not bad, but the bugs associated with constantly loosing your place in the book every time you exit the app and sporadically disappearing highlighted areas makes studying from this book extremely unpleasant. iBooks provides a seamless experience incorporating bookmarking, font adjustment, and very reliable highlighting and note taking features. I recommend, you, the developer, take the opportunity to publish this book through iBooks.
My app had been working just fine until I tried to download chapters 10-12. Now it will not stay open. (It closes by itself immediately after I open it.) This is unfortunate because I need it for my class this semester. I like the app, I just wish it were working properly.
