Simplicity Is Key
I have used figure for a couple of years now, and it is easily my favorite music app ever. I write and produce dance and hip-hop and play the piano. However, I think some of the catchiest beats I've made have been on Figure. Being someone who tends to overthink or overcomplicate things, having simply a lead, bass, and drums, and the user-friendly interface has helped me focus more on creating intuitively. The fact that you can automate each instrument is also a huge plus.
I have been really impressed with the synth presets in Figure in general. They all sound very clean, and the automation is suiting to each sound. The built-in arpeggiation is amazing and really brings each sound to life - probably my favorite feature.
I was about to write something about wishing it was easier to export individual melodies or collaborate with people, but I see that Propellerhead has, with the recent update, added these capabilities. Not only was it a great app to begin with, but they listened to their users and have made significant upgrades throughout the course of the app's availability. Whether you just want to mess around or are a serious musician, you need this app in your life.
Allihoopa updates have killed this app
Let me start by saying that this used to be my favorite app on my iPhone, literally saving me by allowing an outlet for quick, creative outbursts and experiments. It was amazing, but was is the keyword. Ever since the app developers rehauled the entire framework to allow useless connectivity to their, once again, useless Allihoopa "social connectivity network", it has stifled the app in so many ways. One major problem that has only gotten worse and worse is the extreme lag between when touching the notepad and when the app registers the note. Most times, the note registers the beat after the one that was originally tapped. However, "ghost notes" have become more and more frequent, meaning you hit the note, it registers, but no sound ever comes out of it. Ever since the update, these ugly bugs have reared their face and have completely dominated a once functional playground of an app. Also, taking making soundcloud uploading a totally middle-man hassle without even bothering to remove the soundcloud button from the app if the biggest slap in the face to Figure's original user-base. This may seem like a rant, but this has literally went from a "5 times a day" tool to a "once every month or two" frustrating experience because of these bugs, and the developers don't seem too concerned...
Lack of song transition control
During some transitions, magic happens where the two songs sometimes create a mashup that sounds incredible. That said, currently the app does not let you control the rate of the transitions once they start. This would be a five star app if I could somehow control the transition, telling it to stop fading into the next song since the two songs are mixed into a blissful mashup I never knew I needed. Essentially, it's missing the ability to "pause" the transition/fade between the songs. I'd much rather have that as the pause button functionality than pausing the actual music. This app could essentially become a magical "mashup machine" app - is has that ability but lacks that functionality and more user input during the transition. Maybe include a "pro mode" toggle to enable this, devs?
