Customer Reviews

Officially rooting for FD's demise.

I had switched to Movie Magic sometime ago and have happily never looked back. With that being said, I thought I would give Final Draft a second chance since I wanted to write on my iPad.

This app is functional, though unremarkably so, but its fatal flaw is its CONSTANT crashing. In the past five minutes, it's crashed twice, erasing nearly a page of my writing.

Final Draft has long been the industry standard, but their poor upkeep, mediocre management and complaisance is threatening that. Other better and cheaper apps are gaining on them and it's only a matter of time until they are usurped from the number one spot. Fool me once, boys.

For a testament to their ineptitude, listen to the Scriptnotes when the guys running the company are eviscerated by two of the industry's most in-demand screenwriters. Their only tangible response to all their criticism? Aw, come on, we've been around forever and it's harder for us to keep up, so give us a break and keep paying our outrageous prices.

I'm not the type to write nasty reviews. In fact, I'd rather be working on my screenplay right now, but at least I can rest easy knowing that the App Store isn't going to crash and erase everything, which is certainly more than I can say for "Final Draft Writer."

Take my money and run, boys, because your days at number one are limited.

Not bad

I wanted to move a lot of my writing to my iPad, since I recently got a great keyboard for it and am tired of lugging around my laptop and trying to find a place to plug it in. I use Final Draft on my laptop, but also used the web based WriterDuet for some collaborations I do. However, WriterDuet doesn't work whatsoever on the iPad, so I went looking for a new system. There is a lot of bad reviews for Final Draft, so I emailed them with some concerns, mostly if there was a local saving function for when I don't have wifi. (It normally syncs with Dropbox.) There IS a local saving function which is fantastic! There are a few bugs to work out (importing scripts in various fonts make typing impossible), but otherwise it's a really great app.

4 stars for the app. 2 stars for the crashes.

Wish I could rate Final Draft higher. It's mostly well made; there are a few odd interface choices, and it's updated a little less frequently than I'd like, but overall it does the job and does it pretty well.

But the crashes! Just plain writing seems to trigger crashes at least a few times a day in which I lose anywhere from a line to a page worth of work. I'd understand if it was some special function that caused a crash, but this app has been on sale for YEARS now. And yet it still crashes while performing it's one essential (and frankly SIMPLE) task?

I will continue to use this app for now, partly for the desktop integration, and partly because yes, it's the industry standard. As I said, it's a fine app when it works. But please Final Draft, for your own sake as a company, fix this app!
