Initially released in Japan in 1987, the original FINAL FANTASY amazed audiences with its rich story and stunning graphics.

Players guide the Warriors of Light as they set out on a quest to restore the crystals to their former luster. Its side-view battles, choice and promotion of character classes, and sprawling world explored with fantastic vehicles quickly became standards of the series. This game set the stage for all FINAL FANTASY games to come.

This release also contains the bonus dungeons added to later editions of the game--the Soul of Chaos and the Labyrinth of Time.

The Game is good, this app not so much.

For any die hard final fantasy fan like myself - I was excited to find that all 1-6 are available on the iPhone. I've since downloaded 5 and 6, beat them 2 years ago, and am repeat playing them. They are amazing. This one? Not so much.

This update - the first in 2 years - hasn't done anything except fix some bugs. I don't know what bugs, if any noticeable ones at all, were fixed. What I do know, though, is that there are still annoying bars - now decorated the words "Final Fantasy"- on the side of the screen for any iPhone 5 and after. It has not been formatted to fully take advantage of the screen size in any iPhone since the 4S. That being said, you find yourself using the equivalent amount of touchscreen as the 4/4s, which is incredible small and cramped if you've been used to the 5 or 6. On the 6+, it's larger but you still have the bars - which tend to inhibit navigation even more given the size of the phone, unless you haven to have large hands and long fingers. You also still can't suspend the game and resume without returning to the main menu and loading the game again. You won't lose progress, it's just a hassle.

Would I recommend this game? Absolutely - for the NES or Playstation, that is. On the iPhone? No. Not until they format their screen size and remove the need to reload the game. It's completely possible, they did it for 5 and 6, so why not the original?

If it's not broken don't fix it

Don't buy this app or update it if you wish to play the game we grew up with. They made some changes that were indeed in need of fixing. The audio not working unless you activated Siri and went back. But there were some additions that ruined a great environment. The addition of the side bars that say "Final Fantasy" does nothing but make the screen feel cramped and busy. I don't know why they added them. They don't fix any bugs (unless most players where forgetting what game they were playing mid battle). They also tweaked the d-pad so that it appears anywhere you touch instead of a reliable location. This turns the game play to feel more like playing on a magic touch pad instead of the controller we are all so familiar with. Also now the d-pad can cover the center of the screen right over all the action. Why would anyone want the d-pad there? I wish that I could role back an update. The audio/Siri problem was less annoying and is worth dealing with to have the black side bars and proper game control back.

Game is good, app is good, people just like to complain

Just played through the game recently, I very much enjoyed it! I've followed the FF series for as long as I can remember but never played some of the older FF games. Played this one on my iPad, the graphics and functionality of the game was very good.

I don't know why there are negative reviews for this game, it worked fine for me and never once crashed. I could stop the game anywhere and pickup right where I left off.

My one and only complaint is that after I beat the game, it froze at the end of the credits an wouldn't move. I was looking forward to that new game+ file.
