By Apple

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

If you misplace your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac, the Find My iPhone app will let you use another iOS device to find it and protect your data. Simply install this free app on another iOS device, open it, and sign in with the Apple ID you use for iCloud. Find My iPhone will help you locate your missing device on a map, remotely lock it, play a sound, display a message, or erase all the data on it.

If the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch you want to locate is running iOS 6 or later, Find My iPhone also includes Lost Mode. Lost Mode locks your missing device with a passcode and can display a custom message and contact phone number right on the Lock Screen. While in Lost Mode, your device can also keep track of where it has been so you can view its recent location history from the Find My iPhone app.

Please note that Find My iPhone must be enabled in the iCloud settings on your device before you can locate it with this app.

I agree with everyone else that this app is WONDERFUL! I would recommend, though, that "Erase Data" be less accessible on the app or have a different name or some other change because my 12 year old daughter in a panic clicked Erase Data without reading the warnings that she would no longer be able to track the phone after she used that option. We knew that a "friend" from a sleepover at our house had the phone because the thief was putting in her passcode to turn off the tracking feature as soon as we put it in lost mode. The thief was doing it so quickly that we could not pinpoint the location. My daughter thought Erase Data would change the passcode and erase personal texts and photos but that she'd still be able to track the phone's location. Now that the phone is back to factory settings, we know that she'll probably never get the phone back. My daughter is really upset because her iphone is such a large part of her life and she still has 3 months until she qualifies for a new iphone with Sprint. Now our family has learned the hard way to NEVER push that Erase Data button that is so prominently featured on the app. I've left the phone service on for a few days to give the thief time to make some calls because Sprint sends a listing of all phone numbers called for each phone in the monthly bill and that may be our only mechanism for learning which "friend" is the thief.

Five stars aren't enough...

What an amazing app. I was at a crowded sports complex with a soccer field & several baseball fields. Following my daughters soccer game we left the field & were driving down the road when I realized my iPhone was missing. I quickly pulled off the next exit & my daughters who both have iPhones tried calling it but to no avail. While I have the find my phone app on mine, my girls didn't so I quickly downloaded the app & saw my phone was still at the complex. So we turned back around & headed back to field to try and find it. We were 15 mins away so I was nervous some kid or someone would find it & pick it up before we got to it as I had surmised it had fell off my belt when I was carrying soccer bags to our car. When we got back to complex the 4 of us fanned out in the area I thought I may have dropped it and I started pinging the phone. Well it took 2 attempts but my daughter started screaming I hear it, I hear it & ran over and found it still laying in the grass right where I must have dropped it. I was pretty lucky given the amount of soccer players, coaches parents etc as well as baseball players, coaches, parents etc that no one found it before we got back to it. Bottom line if you have an iPhone & don't have this app you really need to rethink that as this app should be mandatory for all iPhone users & families.

Happy ending.

At Angel Stadium for Monster Energy Supercross. At the end my wife left her purse at our seating area. We were gone for 30 seconds and when I returned her purse was gone. Wallet, new prescription sunglasses and her iphone were in her purse. She told me about this app and I downloaded it immediately. Got it started, pinged the phone and the app showed the phone was still in parking lot near street exit. Me and my friends ran to the area 300 feet away. No luck. The exit area like a parking lot, lots of cars crawling out but no way to know which car had the phone. After a few minutes we realized if the phone is moving, you must continue to ping it for updated location. We tracked it to a burger joint then to a residence. The home was a fourplex and gps gave us 2 different addresses. Talk to local PD, not much help there. Called the phone several times, no answer. Went home, slept. Next morning pinged the phone again, still at thefts house. I used the message option on this app to write a kind request. Described the burger place, wrote his address in message, asked for just the phone back for med. info stored on phone, put my number on message. The purse with all contents (except cash and iphone case) was returned within 45 minutes. No questions asked, just happy to get everything back. Great app.
