FindSpace - Disk Usage in Tree Form

By John Holdsworth

Open the Mac App Store to buy and download apps.

Description

FindSpace is a simple application to display usage on your computer's disk in a tree form so you can root out any cruft left over from previous installs and generally find out where all that disk space is going.

To use, make sure to disconnect any network drives and press the "Scan Now" button. Only the largest folders and files are shown sorted by size. Click on the folder icons to drill down to subfolders or the Folder name to view in Finder.

Simple, but does exactly what I need

This basically shows you which folders/files take up the most memory. You can keep drilling down until you find which file/s are taking up too much space.
For instance, I was missing about 20 GB… I used this and found a folder with about 20 GB in an Adobe Premiere (video editing) sub folder. I looked it up online and apparently Adobe makes a secret cache of video files from old projects… which is a complete waste of space. I cleared them out, and viola! my space is back. I would have never looked in this folder to figure it out though… but this program helps you identify things like this.

Did what I needed

I was just looking for an app that would tell me how much crap was in all my folders, and let me drill down to find big stuff to delete. It did that very well! It was quite fast to scan the drive (took less than a minute), and had a nice, simple interface.

It was a little confusing that you click the folders to expand them, and click the name to open in finder. I think a triangle to expand would've been more familiar. But other than that, no complaints.

Needs Improvement

The UI is very clumsy. Type is very small and there is no way to stop a scan once it has begun, except by quitting the application. The 'Scan Now' button remains there, even after it is pressed. It also scans your Time Machine disk which is quite mistfying, since one should never manually remove files from it. I was hoping to use this app to track down space on my drive that could be freed up, but this isn't the app you should be using for that. It would be nice to expose the ability to tune the kinds/sizes/etc. of files that should be included.

I'd steer clear of this app until some major improvements are made.
