This app allowed me to "look over my pilot's shoulder"

Scot Perry

After what happened with the Malaysian flight 370, I decided I'm not going on another flight "blind". My iPhone has a GPS and compass, why not use them while flying on a commercial flight? This program was able to track the position of our flight from LA to Detroit quite well, however I initially found its US ground map to be a bit sparse. It initially showed perhaps 20 US cities and the major land/ water boundaries, but not much else.

After "playing with the program" a little more, and after rebooting the app twice while on Wifi, the maps apparently downloaded themselves and became quite suitable. Their initial "boot-up message" said something about the need to download the maps while on WiFi, but didn't say that the program might have to be rebooted a few times while on WiFi, so I didn't know. I've piloted private planes before, and now as a passenger, I found being able to "look over the shoulder" of our pilot, in addition to providing a sense of security, to also be just plain fun.

The app seemed to be designed for non-pressurized private aircraft, as the speed and altitude indicators stopped working at over approximately 10,000 ft altitude. (Location indicator still worked.) As a passenger, the artificial horizon was not really helpful info. The self orienting map was helpful, but I only found out about this feature after playing with it a little. Still, after manipulating the map, I noticed that the map would stop "self orienting", and that the only way to reset it to "self-orient" was to reboot the app.

While clearly designed for a small private plane, it also works well for those of us who want to "look over the shoulder" of our pilot on a commercial jetliner. So far as I can tell, it's the only app out there that does that well.

Giving airline passengers that critical GPS based flight location and other info in a simple and easily understood way seems to be an Apple-app niche that this program may one day do well in. All of the other apps I saw seemed to either rely on preprogrammed route info, independent of a GPS, be cluttered with nuisance ads, or whatnot.

Two suggestions: Make a separate app version designed specifically for use by commercial airline passengers, clarify in the boot-up message that the program is NOT recommended for use in the air until after the maps are fully downloaded via WiFi and fully viewable.
