Most aircraft today are equipped with so called ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flight radar 24 has a rapidly growing network of several thousand ground stations around the world to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions Flightradar24, with the help of multilateration, is able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders.

Traditional radar data is also used in the app thanks to a direct feed from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This data provides near real-time coverage of all US and Canadian airspace.

Flightradar24 provides unrivaled positional aircraft data coverage around the world but there are areas where we don’t have coverage. If you are only interested in tracking air traffic in a specific region, we suggest that you check our website BEFORE purchasing the app.

Overview of coverage as of April 2015:
* Europe: close to 100%
* North America: 100% of US and Canada via slightly delayed radar data. Real-time coverage for most of US, Canada and Mexico for ADS-B equipped aircraft
* South America: Substantial coverage in most countries including Brazil, Argentina and Chile
* Asia: Substantial coverage in most major Asian countries including Japan, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand, UAE, Malaysia, Taiwan and many other countries. Rapidly expanding coverage in China
* Oceania: Nearly complete coverage in Australia and New Zealand
* Africa: Substantial coverage in South Africa. Limited but growing coverage in the rest of the region

Coverage is subject to change at any time.

What's New in Version 6.7.0

In this release we improved a few existing features. The responsiveness of the AR view has been greatly improved giving you a better experience when viewing details of the aircraft flying overhead.

Filters have also received an update. You can now enter multiple comma separated entries for airlines, airports and registrations. For example, enter "JFK, LGA, EWR" in the airport filter to see flights for all three New York airports.

Airport pin display got smarter and we’ve made finding the airport you’re looking for easier. Pins for busier airports now show when the map is zoomed out and we’re now able to display more airports when you’re zoomed in.

We have now extended our estimation period for aircraft that are outside of our coverage areas. We now have the option to show up to 120 minutes after coverage has been lost.

A few small updates and bug fixes are also included.

Very Cool - Needs Some Improvements

I really like how they thought of so much in this app. The three areas that need great improvements are drop outs, lag time, and to bring the 3D satellite view up to much higher detail, akin to Google maps' and Apple maps' quality. For some reason, the app has trouble tracking planes that are below about 2500 feet in the San Fernando Valley heading in and out of Burbank Airport (KBUR). It's like the app loses the radar feed often in and around this area and altitude. Please fix. One additional function that I would like to see the app offer would be a button that could turn on an overlay of the various ARTCC boundaries in the U.S. That way, while watching flights, we could see when they leave one ARTCC domain and enter another. Another fox worth doing is in the data view. They need to use a different font than white for the time and miles remaining on the trip. Right now, the unfinished portion of the trip is also white causing the tiny font over this background to be very difficult to read.

Some success, but not great

The app performs its core function well: it lets you point at the sky to see info about most planes flying overhead. It lets you see a realtime map of flights worldwide, and tapping on a specific plane gives you detailed info. Features beyond that are not well done. You can search for specific types of flights, but the search filters available limit what you can accomplish. The paid upgrade to alerts has VERY limited functionality. For example, if you want to get alerts for all Boeing 777s in your area flying below 10,000 feet, you have to enter your search region, enter the altitude limit, then enter the aircraft ICAO for the aircraft. The problem? You have to manually do this 3-part process for each and every ICAO subtype of 777 jet, and there are four. Want 787 Dreamliners, too? That's four more manual entries. It gets tiresome quickly. The first-person/3D feature is useless. The paid upgrade for plane icons is great, but it's so important that it should have come standard.

Great App for Planespotters

For anyone who enjoys watching those 'big birds' artfully glide to and fro, from this airport and that; then you need this app. Not only do you have the entire arrival an departure boards available to you, but can search and filter by airline (variety of beautiful liveries) but by aircraft model (the little guys are nice, but you want to know when the heavies and super heaves are arriving, and now you can). The filter also allows selections for airports; inbound and outbound so you can find a nice spot and enjoy the view! Not only does it update for delays departing, but also from enroute as well. Pilots don't like to admit, but they don't always (like rarely) get to fly their entire planned route, and you can see it all from this app; truly useful for planespotters, aviation enthusiasts, and the millions of frequent flyers!
