What's New in Version 4.0.6
For this release, we've addressed a major point of feedback for iPhone readers:
- On your iPhone you can now choose where you land when you open Flipboard. Go to Settings in the app, select Quick Start, and pick from Default (or Home), Tiles (for all the topics and magazines you follow) or Cover Stories (your main home feed you've always loved).
As always, we’d love your feedback. Reach out to us by going to Settings > Help & Feedback.
This was my most used app.
Maybe I'm being harsh docking 2 stars but I'm tired of opening my favorite apps and finding a new redesign that adds no value, does stupid stuff like forcing autoplay on videos or holds you hostage until you go through a tutorial and/or forces you to make selections you are not interested in. This version is better and fixes some of the gripes I had with the original version 4 including the “holding you hostage” part and does feels more responsive.
However it still has the problem of pushing a narrative bubble that skews heavily to one side of the political spectrum. After the surprise (at least to me) that was Nov 2016 I stopped trusting Flipboard's "Trusted Sources" because they were either thoroughly incompetent during the election cycle, or worse they were being untruthful on purpose. I still read them along with others I’ve picked up to balance the narrative, but calling them “trusted” and pushing them on people is a step too far for me.
Flipboard has been my most used app for 7 years, but with every update it seems to be getting farther away from what I loved about it. When updates bring you aggravation instead of joy it’s time to move on. For the moment I’ll continue to use Flipboard, but this version finally pushed me to start looking for a replacement.
Love it. However, latest major changes need some work.
My most used app by far. Simple, clean access to keep me updated on the latest news and topics. Recent update is nice but did make the overall browsing experience a little more complicated (swiping between categories, not having the main board be the default screen that you can immediately start flipping through, and not having the pull to refresh option on the first story of a category (instead it exists the category and you have to then pull to refresh from that level). Would also like more control over the content that is surfaced in the app (it's not always clear why something is appearing in my boards). I find myself using Facebook and Twitter more and more to consume my news (used to use Flipboard almost exclusively). Gotta keep ahead of them, guys! Be careful with the changes so that they aren't just change for change sake...
What you don't realize
This app like many others has permissions to read your data stream. It might not seem that big of a deal but that means even if you are an anonymous user you will suddenly find the same ads you see on Facebook are suddenly showing up on your Flipboard feed. At first I thought it was coincidence. Take it a step further. I was using the app under an anonymous user name and it was still able to connect me (my personal work/school life, etc) to my anonymous user ID and send me obscure targeted ads. Thru it's algorithms it knew exactly who I was. Big data is nothing new. They're constantly farming your info. I get it. We have enough conspiracy theories. But I feel this app overstepped the boundaries of privacy and became too obvious. Too bad. It's such a good app but after I started seeing this happen more and more I decided to use the app less and less.
