get ready to grind some godori

This game is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, combining as it does a lightweight RPG, a pretty tough game of godori (Go-Stop in English), and some hardcore gambling. This feels from start to finish like a Korean game, from the charming and simple art, the distinctive hwatu deck (which is similar to Japanese hanafuda (or flower) cards), and the BRUTALLY STEEP leveling curve. There are some great powerups you can buy, and the AI is more than able to muster a stiff challenge, but the need to conserve HP as well as your betting money makes for a tough slog.

It's tough to complain too much, because whether you win or lose, you still get to pay more godori, and it's an elegant variation on Koi Koi / poker / Rummikub / mahjong, where you assemble tricks and do your best to rack up a high score without being wrongfooted by your opponent or running out of cards. If anything, the RPG combat aspects of the game encourage a more aggressive (reckless) playing style, and this will force you to become a better godori player fast. Be prepared to learn by example, though, because the instructions are not super detailed, nor are they in particularly fluent English (although the rough and ready translation has its own charms).

This is without a doubt the best looking and sounding game of Go-Stop on the App Store. The way it indicates which (potential) tricks you have is both unobtrusive and useful, the way you interact with your hand is intuitive and tactile, and the game has several clever touches to allow you to quickly see what's already been played. It has nice, large card images, and more game designers should copy its exceedingly well-designed built-in hint system (although it would be nice to be able to turn it off). Some of the battle sound effects get repetitive during long play sessions, but overall it has crisp and well-chosen sounds and a load screen that's its own pleasant little ambient environment.

If the developers added more RPG elements to the game or some form of online multiplayer, this would be a 5-star game. As it is, it's still a great niche game that deserves attention if you like card games and stiff challenges, and is compulsively playable. In that way it reminds me of Puzzle Quest, only without the CPU cheating (the game is hard enough that it doesn't need to cheat) and a cuter art style. Easily worth a few bucks.
