MACWORLD GEM - End the chaos of your unorganized files.

Take a look at your Desktop, or the Downloads folder - is it a little disorganized? Or maybe really disorganized? Don't worry, it's really easy to clean up. Download Folder Tidy right now and choose the folder to organize and with one click you'll see the files get sorted into the appropriate sub folders (Pictures, Word Documents, Numbers, Archives, etc).

Need a little more control? Open up the preferences, change the order of the built-in rules, or start to make custom rules. Use the powerful predicate editor to make pretty much any rule you'd like. For example, create a rule to move all photos with a size bigger than 5MB and older than a year into a folder. Pretty neat, eh?

Check out some of the awesome features:

• Organize your files into subfolders based on the file type and/or rules.
• Use one of the many built-in rules, or create powerful ones based on predicates.
• Choose what types of files to clean up.
• Choose files and folders to ignore during a clean up.
• Choose where to put the cleaned up files and folders.
• Options to ignore aliases, folders and anything with a label.
• Ability to undo the clean up.
• Over 600 five star ratings internationally.

Ratings and Reviews

Incredibly useful and fast

I use this app to keep my Desktop and unruly Downloads folder neat and organized. If you consider how much you’ll use this app over time fight back the chaos in your digital life, it’s well worth the price of admission.

Thanks for the nice review and we're super happy to hear you are enjoying Folder Tidy!

2 Stars. 5 if an update puts everything where it belongs

If you used to be neat and "life" has changed that a couple of bucks to save 20-30 minutes sorting out your desktop may be worth it. But be aware it will only sort out the files (mostly) into labeled subfolders within 1 main folder like the picture on the ad. It won't put them where they actually belong… in your documents folder> pictures, movies or music. And if you use it for work, well plan on those client documents to be all mixed together and leaving those pdfs still sitting on the desktop.

It's like having Mom else sort and fold your socks from out of the dryer only to put them into the clothes basket. Eventually she'd tell you to put them away in your drawer before going out to play. So while having Mom back to do my laundry and match my socks sounds nice it really only postpones the inevitable anyway. It also seems the sock gnome lives here too because some files are left on the desktop and documents get lumped all together like the pile of mix-matched socks we all prayed would match the lone ones in the draw.

Now at $1.99, and a prayer-soon a FREE update could put everything in its final destination and have with the ability choose multiple folders for each type of document. Rather than paying higher for a full featured version.

Ok, it works as advertised.

Basically, it seems to me that the app archives the Desktop content, placing the items in an organized, archived, and dated sub-folder. So, each time you run the app, a new archived and dated sub-folder with contents is created in the location of your choosing. The issue here is that the content is simply now out of sight. I suppose that could be considered a benefit, but it's sort of like moving dirty cloths off the floor into multiple hampers - makes the floor neater but the act doesn't get the cloths washed, sorted, and replaced in the dresser. Furthermore, I found the results to be variable: some folders and files were left behind on the Desktop. So, I reconstructed my Desktop with the prior clutter and ran the app a second time: again, I had inconsistent results, with different folders and files being left behind. But, who can compain about "free"?
