Forbidden Secrets: Alien Town reviewed by LynxMinx
This was a very interesting game. Different sort of story, scary but without RATS ( don't know if they are in the bonus chapter; hope not)! Had a journal, good hint system and strategy guide. The graphics were dreary but good. It was a lengthy game, plus the bonus chapter. The inventory was labeled and there was a teleport map with clearly marked objectives. Believe me, you needed that map! There were different types of HO scenes, but not an overabundance. Lots of different and fun puzzles and mini-games!
The reason I took off a star was because the game had some glitches, like freezing up, kicking me out, but I could still play it. Also, it was very hard on the eyes, especially when searching for the beyond objects. In certain mini-games, when you needed to use a diagram, it was too small to make it out.
However, all in all, a very good game! BigFish, you and Alawar make a formidable team! Their games lately have far surpassed ERS and Elephant! Just work out the kinks, and next time can we have another gorgeous game? Definitely would like a sequel, with improvements to make it easier on your eyes!
The game itself, and the storyline are great. The big problems that make this game so frustrating is that the Spaces between each scene are way too long. It really detracts from the game when every time you switch scenes it takes over 3 seconds, which doesn't sound like much, but it really gets in the way of the game. My other major complaint would be that finding the "sweet spot" to use items or place items is too finite. It takes several tries when using any tools or even playing the mini games to get an object placed or chosen. It makes it too easy to miss things that are important later in the game. The mini games are fun and challenging, the graphics and sound are good. I'm still fairly close to the beginning of the story, but it seems to be an original, good story. Looking forward to continuing the game.
So Far So Good.
The first thing that caught my attention about this game is it that it is actually developed by Alawar Entertainment (and of course published by Big Fish). I've always liked Alawar games so it's a no brainer for me.
This game does have voice overs which to me make these games much more enjoyable. Plus,
I like that moving things from your inventory is smooth (as it should be). It's not the "click and place" type of action as seen on some games. Lastly, it doesn't require double clicking in every single scene to navigate and it doesn't have a "back button which is one of those things that tend to annoy me.
