“The new Foursquare, like Netflix, takes a lot of the work out of finding the right thing for the right moment.” — The Verge

How It Works:

Tell Foursquare what you like — be specific, like “craft beer” or “fried chicken,” or more general, like “outdoor seating” or “romantic places.” Every search is tailored to your tastes, your past ratings, and picks from friends and experts you trust.

A note on battery –
We've spent years developing the location technology that powers Foursquare, making it extremely power efficient. But, as with all apps of this type, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Better Than Yelp

Foursquare was already the best way to find personal recommendations and learn about the city around you. It just keeps getting better and better at helping people explore. Yelp is for whiny olds who like to think they're restaurant critics.

Also, I've been saving places left and right! (Seriously, it's almost becoming a problem. So many good restaurants.) It's awesome when the app alerts me to a cool place but I'm just not in the mood at the moment. I can go ahead and save it to my to-do list, and Foursquare will remind me to check it out next time I'm in the area. I'm also a big fan of the new Lists tab; that was a great feature in the old Foursquare that's coming back and I'm excited!

Core Users Get Middle Finger

At least you broke my check-in addiction. Now watching for the coming demise of FS.

Separating check-ins (into the Swarm app) from Foursquare makes no sense. Hate the trend to bust features into separate apps; I get that it's all about dollars. But it's unintuitive and silly; users are an afterthought. Now totally useless to me. I used Foursquare as a travel diary, but all those relevant, cool features are now gone.

Don't believe these faux 5-star ratings trying to pass off the app as something great. The app's ranking in the App Store tells the real story.

Back on Foursquare

This is a different, and vastly improved, Foursquare from what I remember a couple years ago.

It knows where I am without me checking in and it's making great recommendations.

Looks like someone pivoted in the right direction and is now probably leading the pack as big data and AI advances.
