“The new Foursquare, like Netflix, takes a lot of the work out of finding the right thing for the right moment.” — The Verge
How It Works:
Tell Foursquare what you like — be specific, like “craft beer” or “fried chicken,” or more general, like “outdoor seating” or “romantic places.” Every search is tailored to your tastes, your past ratings, and picks from friends and experts you trust.

A note on battery –
We've spent years developing the location technology that powers Foursquare, making it extremely power efficient. But, as with all apps of this type, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
What's New in Version 8.9
This update introduces our brand-new saved places tab. We’ve heard from a ton of you about how much you love to save great places to refer back to later. Now, those places have a dedicated home that’s just one tap away. We’ve also added more details to places, so you can see everything your friends are saying about them and if they’ve made our new “Best of” lists.
In the iPad app, we’ve added the ability to write tips. Take advantage of that big keyboard and start leaving tips at your favorite places today!
As always, this update has some great speed improvements and bug fixes as well. Love Foursquare? Drop us a rating in the App Store!
Passive recs keep getting better
I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed with passive (real-time) recs. I don't mind passively sharing my location with 4SQ, but I expect for it to work both ways. I just spent an entire day in a new city without receiving any passive recs. This is the fifth time (4th different city) that has happened. What are you doing with all of these awesome tips that we're posting?
I've been using foursquare consistently since 2009, and I was among the first 40,000 users. It's sad to see that some of my favorite features (points, leaderboard, and badges) have now been removed. Said gamification elements compelled me to get out and explore the world around me.
That said, I'm excited to see where this new direction, that Foursquare is embarking upon, leads the company. With all the data that they are now gathering with "Pilgrim", passive recs should improve greatly in the coming weeks and months.
The passive recs have so much potential, but in practice they haven't worked well for me. Even with my notifications set to 'Explorer', I get zero passive recs when traveling.
Although I'm not completely happy with all of the recent changes, I'm going to remain a loyal user of an app that has brought so much fun, joy, and adventure into my life over the years.
F is for FAIL
I've used foursquare for several years, loved it and recommended it to many people BEFORE.
Foursquare used to be great at discovering new places for me. Letting me know what was around the corner that I was missing even in my own neighborhood.
Now, I cannot discover new places. I have to rather make note of a business (visually or word of mouth) and search for it.
I used foursquare to discover restaurants (xyz has an 8.9 rating and is 700 ft from you). Yay.
The new foursquare is ANTI SMALL BUSINESS. Old foursquare would let me know of mom and pops businesses, services easily around the block. But now this new app is telling me I have to go to a non small business mostly at least 5 miles from where I am.
What if I'm walking???? What if I'm at home and want to check something within a 2 mile radius?
I've saved places I planned to visit and find their "choice" of "nearby" as useless. It does not organize "nearby" at all.
ONE star replaces my former FIVE star rating.
Change is good.
This release of Foursquare breaths new life into a service I've been using for a long time. I'm loving the discovery element of Foursquare and don't feel bad when I miss a check in.
It's a lot easier to recommend Foursquare to someone since you don't have to check in to make it useful.
