“The new Foursquare, like Netflix, takes a lot of the work out of finding the right thing for the right moment.” — The Verge
How It Works:
Tell Foursquare what you like — be specific, like “craft beer” or “fried chicken,” or more general, like “outdoor seating” or “romantic places.” Every search is tailored to your tastes, your past ratings, and picks from friends and experts you trust.

A note on battery –
We've spent years developing the location technology that powers Foursquare, making it extremely power efficient. But, as with all apps of this type, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
What's New in Version 8.7
Don't want to create a Foursquare account? In this new version, you can get personalized recommendations while logged out. Just open the app to get started.
This update also includes a new widget for finding great tips when you’re out and about. To use it, pull down the Today screen and tap the “Edit” button at the bottom.
We also made some bug fixes and a bunch of small improvements to the iPad app. As always, if you love Foursquare, please show us some love and rate this new version in the App Store.
Passive recs keep getting better
I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed with passive (real-time) recs. I don't mind passively sharing my location with 4SQ, but I expect for it to work both ways. I just spent an entire day in a new city without receiving any passive recs. This is the fifth time (4th different city) that has happened. What are you doing with all of these awesome tips that we're posting?
I've been using foursquare consistently since 2009, and I was among the first 40,000 users. It's sad to see that some of my favorite features (points, leaderboard, and badges) have now been removed. Said gamification elements compelled me to get out and explore the world around me.
That said, I'm excited to see where this new direction, that Foursquare is embarking upon, leads the company. With all the data that they are now gathering with "Pilgrim", passive recs should improve greatly in the coming weeks and months.
The passive recs have so much potential, but in practice they haven't worked well for me. Even with my notifications set to 'Explorer', I get zero passive recs when traveling.
Although I'm not completely happy with all of the recent changes, I'm going to remain a loyal user of an app that has brought so much fun, joy, and adventure into my life over the years.
I have found quite a few restaurants that we want to try in the one "$" price range. I would like to see more of the listings include current menus. I did not see large dinner salads in the choices for finding what we were looking for. Some of the menus were a bit out of date with the price listings when we looked them up on the Internet, away from this app. Despite that, it has been really helpful to find new restaurants that we are looking forward to going to for the first time and I am sure I will continue to enjoy this.
OK, I'm changing it to five stars. I have found so many restaurants that I can't wait to try. We wouldn't have known about them without this app.
Best way to organize your exploration
A two week trip in Europe would not have been as fun without 4SQ. I made a list and used GPS to navigate from destination to local joint to check out.
The application helps you keep track of that "new place to try" you hear from friends without forgetting about it. As another early user who missed the game aspect, I realize there is a lot of potential to use the data mining to improve our choices in where to visit for a great time.
