Description

WordNet® - Free Urban Dictionary is a large lexical database of English. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets), each expressing a distinct concept.

WordNet superficially resembles a thesaurus, in that it groups words together based on their meanings. However, there are some important distinctions. First, WordNet interlinks not just word forms—strings of letters—but specific senses of words. As a result, words that are found in close proximity to one another in the network are semantically disambiguated. Second, WordNet labels the semantic relations among words, whereas the groupings of words in a thesaurus does not follow any explicit pattern other than meaning similarity.

Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the creators of WordNet and do not necessarily reflect the views of any funding agency or Princeton University.

Ratings and Reviews

Does not find its own suggestions

One would think when you start typing something and the app suggests a number of completions that the words are recognized because there are definitions for them. Not necessarily true here. I started entering "bald-faced lie" and it offered a number of alternate idioms, none of which that I tapped on existed.

It did have regular word definitions but it's not even good at that compared to other free options. It is extremely bare-bones, the interface clunky (eg: tapping history and favorites icons resulted in a rather unpolished "not found!!!!!" modal error message), it lacks icon labels and developer info. For some reason there is a section with various news sources. It seems like an experiment by somebody new to programming. I'm not even sure how I ended up with it since it isn't listed under any search I can think of that I might have done, not even the app's actual name "freedictionary", although that could be an App Store problem. I just wanted to write this review so no one else downloads it wondering if it's any good, like I did. Apple needs to do a better job of curating.

Completely disappointed

Every single second pop-up message comes. Almost no urban words, and says sorry no meaning available. A waste of time. Please whatever you make, do respect users. We’re installing an app free that doesn’t mean you’ll keep bothering us every second.
