Somewhat Useful But Not Up-to-Date

This app is a relatively useful companion to the Freegal website. It, however doesn't have all the features the website has. I wish the interface were updated to be more in line with the latest iOS version. It looks so outdated. Also, the web has a feature that if you have reached the max downloads for the week, 5, it will allow you to add a song to a wish list instead. I don't see this option on this app, but I must say, I haven't tried using the download button once I've reached the limit, so it may be there.

Overall the app could use some updates too. It's not that intuitive. Navigation needs some thoughtfulness. Even the website navigation is bad. If songs/artists aren't in one of their lists like a "Top List" you have to search for them.

One huge thing that needs fixing is that while a song is playing, iPhone (at least iOS 9 on iPhone6) doesn't recognize it as music, so iPhone doesn't show the controls for play/pause or back/forward. So while you are, for example streaming a whole album, it won't let you skip a song because there is no navigation for that. You just have to let it keep playing an album like one giant track.

no point, really

As others have said, nice to see them trying but lacks functionality. I could not get my way to a song I had in mind as a test of the app by using either the artist or album title, even though both were entered correctly — only by entering the song title.

Even the workaround mentioned in another review using the "Recent Downloads" feature on the Freegal site (which has always been there — not a new thing with this app or anything) is quite limited, as you'll find that "recent" means "not older than the previous week". So given that and the other lack of other functionality, the most this app buys you is a bit more than a week (though not as much as two weeks) if you're travelling, say, and you don't want to lose your downloads for that week. I'd already done that on an iPad without any such app, however, on a previous occasion, clicking to download the tracks I wanted even knowing that they wouldn't download to that iPad, precisely so I could get back in a few days and then use that Recent Downloads link to get them "again".

Perhaps they'll get the thing working fully down the road, but for now, there's no reason for Freegal users to get/install this.

Better than it's given credit for

People who complain that this app only allows 5 songs a week need to understand that it's a library-based app and not COMPLAIN about free anything.
As far as syncing with iTunes, sure I wish songs synced directly over, but it's not hard to do manually. You just need to go to the freegal website from your computer and log in. It keeps a record of all the songs you've downloaded, and you can save them to your hard drive and then import them easily to iTunes. So you can download your 5 songs a week on your mobile device, and they'll be stored in your app and account until you go to your computer and sync them, but you don't have to do it in the same week.
Mostly music you've never heard of, but also some good stuff, top hits.
