The base game is good. Classic, arcade, and Zen work just as well as they did before the update. However, the update added a new tournament feature which is more frustrating than challenging. To give a quick overview, the tournament is similar to classic mode except you are going up against a computer AI. The frustration factor comes in a variety of ways. For example, fruit that you have to slice will very often be directly on top of your opponents fruit. Slicing the fruit will ruin your combo and give points to your opponent. But if you don't slice the fruit, it will count against you as well. If you miss three fruits the game will end and you will lose, regards of who has more points. What ever you decide to do, it's a lose-lose situation. On top of that this mode introduces a second layer of monetization. Instead of using the gems you have been collecting, the developers now require that you use a different kind of currency. To get this currency, you will need to play mini games which are equally as frustrating as the tournament mode. Or, for a fee, you can buy this currency and skip playing the mini games entirely. All in all, this update looks more like a way to squeeze money out of the consumer than it is a tribute to those who have stuck with the game for so long. If you download this app, don't bother playing the new tournament mode. It's an absolute waste of your time. The base game is good, but the update stinks.

Ridiculously unfair and frustrating

At first tournament mode was fun and refreshing it made me want to play the game more, not to mention that the game is pretty addictive itself. But after I had gotten to the last opponent in tournament mode, which is Rinjin, the game took a turn for the worse. At first I thought that I just wasn't performing well enough to win but then I realized that the game had just made it nearly impossible to win. It became rage inducing switching between mini games and arcade mode just to earn another attempt to compete against Rinjin and ultimately lose. The game seems to favor the computer because my fruit is always spread out and close to bombs while it seems that his fruit is clumped together and easier to rack up combos with, not to mention that he is lighting fast. He seems to know where the fruit will be before it even appears on the screen. His fruit also always covers mine which makes me either miss a fruit and have it fall off the screen or suffer a five point penalty. I also find it unfair that as soon as I get a combo an even larger amount of fruit is launched up so that he can get a bigger combo than me this usually happens near the end as well. This game mode has an excessive amount of flaws and it has ruined the entire game for me.

Loved the game then the update happened

I play this game both on my phone and iPad. I have several complaints about the recent update. 1. The game does not sync your most recent achievements across devices it will update all devices with the profile that has the LEAST amount of progress. Example I unlocked rinjin on my iPad, not on the phone. When I linked up to wifi my accomplishment was deleted instead of updated. Candy crush does it why can't fruit ninja?
2. In tournament mode the game is deliberately programmed to cheat the player. Your fruit IS ALWAYS over your opponent's fruit. If you wait to swipe when the fruit is not overlapping the swipe is not detected and you're penalized for dropped fruit. While your opponent never loses points and their blade miraculously never hit your overlapped fruit.
3. 3 dropped fruit and you lose even if your score is higher, which is nonsense.
I would suggest ignoring their stupid festival mode because there is nothing festive or fun about it. It's frustrating and impossible to win because the game is designed for the player to lose.
