Fungi is a mushroom identification application.

Fungi allows you to search among nearly 700 mushroom species using a dynamic description system based on hymenium type, cap shape, hymenium attachment type, stipe characters, spore-print color and/or ecological type.

Selecting a mushroom from the list matching your criteria gives you access to its Wikipedia page, complete with available pictures, description, scientific classification, ...

The complete Fungi database is included in the downloaded application providing full functionality where no network is available.

Correct mushroom identification is difficult. Do not ingest any wild mushroom until it has been checked by an expert mycologist.

Wikipedia? Really? I bought this app for you to tell me in the first screen that this information was compiled off of Wikipedia? To me that is not worth my money. Thanks, but no thanks. I can use Wikipedia for FREE.

A cool tool to help you learn about mushrooms

This is a smart and sophisticated app. I like that its core function is descriptive--identifying the physical features of a mushroom (including spore color!) before offering a possible identification. The mix-and-match interface is super-cool. I really like that edibility is not the main focus, but it's provided as part of a broader set of information. And the developer also points users toward other resources of information.

I also like very much that the first thing you see whenever you open this app is a warning screen. Even experienced mushroom hunters should maintain caution and care with their identifications. 100% certainty is the key to a enjoying both the culinary pleasures of wild mushrooms and a long life.

I bought this as part of a review of similar apps for a mycology publication that I edit. I was pretty skeptical about how these things could be used. But Simon de Bernard has designed his app responsibly and respectfully and his is the only one I can recommend at this time. I'm sure that there are some improvements that can be made and I look forward to seeing how future versions of the Fungi app will evolve this model.

I too take my hat off to the creators of this app. I am so impressed with everything. With every app out there, you can improve a few things and with this is app there is a few.

1.) make a favorites tab so I can keep my favs close by

2.) I love the idea about a GPS tracking system for rack fungus I find. It would be nice to have a good Idea where I find my Fungi.

3.) have a search by area. If I live in ohio it would be nice to be able to do a search for mushrooms in Ohio and even maybe search for what's in season, or edible compared to non edible. Every app like this should have a search function.

4.) I noticed some fungus does not describe where they are found. Some do but alot just say what type of area they are in but not what area of the workd they can be found in. This would make it easier when going on a weekend Hike to narrow it down to what I am looking for.

Again, this is nit picking but this would for sure turn this into one of my front pagers if those things were added in the next upgrade. I still love the app and you can count on me to open this app at LEAST once a day.
