What's New

Version 10.9.16

An under the hood change to deal with a 3rd party shutting down their company. You shouldn't notice a difference.

* we're now using our own server to do the trail-routing, because the 3rd party provider shut down - it's the same software, so you shouldn't see any changes
* we also switched the auto-naming of waypoints/tracks, to a new server - but again, it's the same software and you shouldn't see a difference

Best GPS app.

Cardgenius

An amazing app that has helped and been with me for 3 years now and almost 100 summits. Will be worth keeping an old device around just to use for this app once the updates stop.

Gonna buy a cheap iPhone 6 or 6S and just use it like a dedicated GPS.

Just downloaded the new app and am going to give it a try. Nice to see they rewarded the people who purchased the original app with a free subscription to the new one for a few years. That’s great customer service right there and will make me happy to pay once my free trial runs out.

Phenomenal Tool, after deeper customizimation

Aarakelian

Download the OpenLandscapeMap HD from the layer menu > More Layers > Topo Maps. The OpenHikingMap HD also works well, but I prefer the Landscape map for hiking.

Google “how to add Google Hybrid maps to Gaia GPS” and you should find a few pages showing you how to add Google maps from your computer browser.

After setting those up, you will have an absolutely incredible tool to aid you in your outdoor adventures. The default maps are pretty bad, otherwise incredible.

The Classic version won’t import GPX data

Chihuahua Chick

Though the Classic version worked great with iOS 10, it will no longer import GPX track or waypoint data with iOS 11.
I contacted Gaia GPS customer support and after several attempts to fix this issue I installed the new subscription based version. They provide the new version at no cost for two years for those who already have the Classic version. Now both versions work to import GPX data.

Developer Response

Hi,

I'm sorry you're still having trouble importing files.

I think we may have figured out the issue here, and if you'd like to give the following a try and write back to support to let us know your results, that'd be greatly appreciated.

1) While testing imports, the team has found that file imports work for them as they should. You can watch a video of us importing a GPX file to the app here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hviakzv6pj6az31/import-gpx.mov?dl=0

Did you follow the same steps, but Gaia GPS did not show as an option?

2) If so, I have a guess at what the cause of this and how to fix it.

We have had a partnership with an app called Theodolite for a while, and recently the Theodolite developer pointed out we had wrongly implemented declaring what types of files Gaia GPS would import, and that this bug was affecting his app, and some users couldn't import, depending on which app they installed first (our or Theodolite). So, we made some changes to fix that for them, but maybe there was a side effect.

If that's the problem, I think you could fix it by deleting/reinstalling the app, and the fact that it works for me corroborates that. I'd suggest you first make sure you are 100% backed up to gaiagps.com (http://gaiagps.com/). You can look at your data on the website, and if it's all there, you can safely delete/reinstall.

I'm sorry for the issue. If you do delete/reinstall and that works, it'd be good to know that, and maybe we can figure out a way to fix it without making people do that too.
