I don't usually write reviews, but in this case I felt compelled to point out a few things for others before they spent the money. I have been using the trial version of Game Maker on my PC for a few weeks now and it has been wonderful. I bought a new Macbook Pro and immediately purchased the full version of GM through the App store. I don't know what Yo Yo has done but they missed a few major things. First off you can't import regular PNG files and use them as sprites to animate, at least in my experience so far . The sprite editor itself has no magic wand selection tool or eraser. I really don't understant this one at all but it makes creating sprites in GM very frustrating (PC version has both of these). Another small but irritating thing, sprites default to transparent, meaning you have to uncheck the box everytime to make visible sprites. Not the case witht the PC version. I ran into a bug that would not allow me to place objects in a room, never found a resolution. Be warry before you purchase this version. I love the porgram on my PC and it has taken me closer to creating a game than ever before, but the Mac version in its current state is less than ideal.
Examples will not load - Newer version needed
I am having the same problem as Israel Torres and Otterman. I get an error stating that the file was created with a newer version. I have downloaded the newest version and it has not helped me. I noticed earlier that Otterman was eventually able to get past this through the support teams help. Can someone please assist me with this? Outside of this problem, the software appears to be quite fun. Being able to look at the examples would assist me in setting up my games. I would love to upgrade my review once this issue is resolved. I have also searched the support pages but I have not found a solution as of yet.
Its a good solid App
If you are looking for an Game Builder that does a lot of the work for you or your not the best at programming your own game using a Game Engine and/or building your own Game Engine then this is a good choice. It can do some 3d as well through a C like scripting language which is easy to pick up for those that have some programming experience. While it does lack in some areas as all Game Builders do this still can create solid games in a number of different genres.
