Heart Rate Fail

I expected the Heart Rate feature on the watch to work, since this is, well, Vivosmart "HR". After much trial and error, I finally found the best position on my arm to register a heart rate. It works OK for resting or moderate activity, but is useless during higher intensity exercise. It takes about 20-30 minutes of high HR exercise for it to even register more than a gentle exercise rate; and even when it does catch up, it still registers about 15-20 BPM less than actual (comparing it to a chest strap, machine's sensors, manual counting and years of experience with perceived heart rate). Besides messing up the heart rate stats, this also invalidates two of the most useful measurements: High-Intensity minutes and calories burned - which are based on heart rate.
Also would be nice if you could turn off the step counter without turning off the watch. The counter is very sensitive and records things that aren't really steps (like an elliptical), but I want to leave the watch on to track exertion.

Missing heart rate

I really like the look and fit of Garmin watches. I really like the large face that makes it easy to read. I like being able to tailor the profile to my characteristics. I think the watch itself is great, functional, and stylish. I find the gps function very reliable. I compared the speed readings to my car and bicycle and it was a good match. As pleased as I am with 90% of the Garmin heart rate monitor system, the missing 10% is the pairing of heart rate chest strap, the main reason I purchased the system.

I had over 4 Garmins heart rate monitors to use during my workouts, but all of them had an issue recording my heart rate. I hoped that if I purchased their top watch (Fenix 3 heart rate monitor), I would be able to have a reliable heart rate/calorie count.

Currently, my Fenix 3 does not fill this task. During my low impact workouts (step mill, elliptical, weight lifting, aerobic dance, etc.) there will moments when the heart rate is not recorded, something over a span of a few minutes, but often under 40 seconds. In a 30 minute workout my heart rate recording may stop three times at 40 seconds each. The stoppage of the heart rate throw off the calorie count.

My customer service experience has been great. I stated that I had over four Garmin watches, that is because Garmin replaced my watch at no cost or credit me the money. The replacement came after it was not the fault of the chest strap and I either replaced or upgraded the watch.

Garmin vivosmart ROCKS!

My husbands company bought all the employees fitbits and incentivized them to start moving in order to keep it for free. After researching I bucked the trend and boy am I glad I chose a Vivosmart! I wear it in the shower and charge it once a week (usually when I know I'll be sedentary for awhile!). It has tons of info available at my fingertips- how many steps today, in the last week, month and year. Also shows my sleep patterns and hours slept, restless and awake, which has helped me buckle down and get to bed earlier! Hubby has already had to return his &hitbit due to malfunction. I love my vivosmart!!!!!
