Great data display; Connections are fun

Seattlerunner

I’ve been using this app for nine months since I bought my Forerunner 935. The types of data that you see on your homepage are customizable. It did take a little while to figure out where to find some of the other data I wanted to see but it’s under the “more” tab. It displays the data more accurately than my Strava app. I like that I can connect to other apps through Garmin Connect, however. I really like how the triathlon app shows up and I can look at each individual sport separately or the entire event at once. I look at my sleep data regularly and it’s nice to be able to scroll through a day at a time or look at it by week or longer chunks of time. I’ve also enjoyed the connections aspect of the app. Not very many USA participants that I have found but I enjoy seeing the workouts/ routes of Connections I’ve made all over the world. For data, I much prefer using Garmin Connect over Strava. However, Strava has a much higher usage in the USA and therefore more lively social media. If you want to create routes, you need to do it on the Garminconnect website on a computer but they import automatically into the app and you can use them in your workouts after that. Previously I used Suunto’ Movescount software for 6 years and have found this to be much better/more useful for the data usage and social media as well.

Unintuitive

If you bought a Fenix 5 and want to use this app to see your First Beat data you'll be disappointed. The app does display almost all the data but it's buried in the back of the app and even though you can customize the front page of the app you can't bring any of the Performance Stats up to the front page. This includes things like VO2 Max. The app also does not show Recovery Time anywhere. It does show Training Load but as you probably know by now unless you're a) a runner or bicyclist and b) train outside once a week you will not be getting a Training Status. A really suspicious thing about this app is that you can't view or sync it offline. This is crazy. If I'm on an airplane and a connection isn't available I should be able to use the app if not sync the app. It really makes no sense. Why does it have to be online to show stored data? It must be so it forces you be online every time you sync so it has an opportunity to upload to Garmin the data the app/watch has mined. I have real concerns about the lack of privacy and the amount of non-exercise data the app mines. Overall the app is cumbersome and frustrating. The interface needs to be streamlined while also allowing more flexibility.

3 Stars? 5 Stars?

I'mDave

Have to rate this with 5 stars because it does exactly what they advertise, every time, without problems. Technically a 5 star app. BUT, i want to rate it as with 3 stars or less because i don't like it. I use it to get my run data out of my watch and into Garmin Connect, but for nothing else. The problem is with the stats reporting. I couldn't care less about the “last 4 weeks”, the “last 7 days,” or any rolling averages. I want to know how this week compares to last week, the week before, etc. I want to know how last month/year compares to the previous month/year, the one before that. I want calendar data, not rolling averages. And even more, maybe, to say that i ran an average of x miles/day over a particular time period simply because you took the total miles and divided by the total number of days in that period is absolutely worthless. The only useable number is the total number of miles divided by the number of days you ran. Otherwise there is zero use for your statistic. 5 stars technically. 2-3 for usability.
