Slow to update the app

This is generally a good app, with a key feature being you have your map data on the phone, so driving somewhere with no cell coverage doesn't affect you. The map keeps working, unlike a program that downloads map data on the fly. Live traffic data is also very helpful in routing commutes. You already know the way home, but it's helpful to be able to choose an alternate when traffic is stubbed up on the usual route.

Unfortunately, Garmin is slow to roll out updates. iOS 10 seems to have hobbled map rendering in this app. Last update to this app is right at a year ago, even though Apple has been pretty open with iOS betas so developers could be prepared for the update. I have submitted an inquiry to Garmin customer support to find out if a fix is in the pipeline. I will update this review based on what I find out.

Update 1: Garmin responds that they have a team of engineers looking into it. Reading between the lines, it would seem that perhaps they didn't participate in the beta testing of iOS 10, and only started looking into updating this app upon receiving complaints after the final iOS rollout.

Works fine but map updates painful to complete

Years after this app launched, one big issue remains - each map update requires a complete re-download of all map data rather than applying incremental changes. This means you have to babysit the download process for several gigabytes worth of data every time the maps are updated (once every few months).

The Garmin map data server is bandwidth constrained - even on a very fast connection your map download will pause or go slowly at times. Expect to spend up to several hours letting your device do its download thing and checking it once in a while to make sure it’s still downloading.

Sometimes, as just happened to me, the map download will restart from the beginning. I had over 2GB downloaded of the 2.5GB map and it started over from the beginning.

Also a warning - if you have automatic app updates enabled and Garmin releases a new version, the new version will require a new map download immediately - otherwise you’ll have no maps available. Very unfortunately, new Garmin app versions do not give you a choice about continuing to use your existing installed maps so if you’re on the road or away from a fast connection, you’re now without Garmin maps. A big problem.

The Garmin map downloads continue to be a big pain in using this app.

A minor thing - wish the app was called Garmin NA for ex, or Garmin, and the app icon reflect the map region. Instead the app is called “N. America” - which I don’t personally like.

This app make no sense The worst App I ever try.

I would lie to be very honest and alert everyone abuot the issue you will have if you purchase this app. The reason of the GPS concept is to make your life easier, I bougth all my life Garmin product becuase of product quality and during that time I have been created tons of waypoints, routes and personal POI and transfer it from one product to another using basecamp. I bought this app to reduce the number of devices I have in my car and avoid someone to brake my window to take my GPS, good idea and the way everyone think about this. So my surprice is that I can't not transfer WAYPOINTS, ROUTES and POI, so I have to do the work again and this make no sense, this is compeltily riciculus and is the worst business case GARMIN never did today exist alot app FREE that do that using standard GPX files and is incredible that GARMIN can not do that with their own products. I'm requesting my money back and will let you know status in aonther review.
