The application "Geiger Camera" uses the camera as a detector of radioactivity. It will allow you to alert you in case of nuclear accident, and to monitor the radioactivity around you.
The CMOS sensors that fit the iPhone 4 and 3GS are sensitive to the X-radiations and Gamma.
Demo : http://goo.gl/EyZOx
This application will allow you to:
- Assess the environmental radioactivity.
- Monitor the radiation level in your area, your home and your workplace.
- To control small objects of the everyday life likely to be radioactive (watches, metals).
- To detect the presence of radioactive sources or levels of contamination important in the environment. - To consider the radioactivity ambient.
For this it is necessary to obscure the camera of your iPhone, setting an opaque paper with an adhesive, or by simply posing your iPhone 4 on a desk, camera downwards.
The feature "Alert" available in the first tab allows to detect within 30s the presence of contamination and radioactive sources nearby above 6.6μSv/h (watch, a piece of radioactive metal ...).
The feature "Measure" can perform an accurate estimate of the level of natural radioactivity or the ambiant radioactivity in the presence of sources. It can require several hours in case of low radioactivity as the natural radioactivity.
It's better to let the measure turn during the night and to connect your iPhone on the sector. You can turn off the screen of the iPhone using the hold button above iPhone.
You can at the end of a Measure, save the data. The total absorbed dose will be displayed and compared with respect to the dose limit for exposure of the International Commission on Radiological Protection.
Interest and limits of use:
The Geiger counter, like all conventional radiation meters, does not answer all the problems of radiation detection and radio-protection. Alpha emissions are not detected (e.g. emitted by radon). Low levels of irradiation may not be detected.
This app is intended for the use of the private individuals as a tool for pre-detection and is not be recommended for professional uses.

Cool theory, doesn't work
Using a source measuring 60K CPM (gamma) or 10 uSv/h on a calibrated PM1703 (~2000 CPM on a Geiger counter) this app was unable to detect the presence of the source even with very long integration counts. Similarly, other sources had no effect. The PM1703 could detect the source through the iPad, several feet away, almost instantly. You cannot legally own an unlicensed source with the activity of the one I used in most countries.
In manually observing the camera, pair production was noted for the source approximately once per minute. This is not adequate to achieve statistical significance at background levels.
Indeed CMOS/CCD sensors are a little sensitive to radiation, but much like an ion chamber, you need a source stronger than you can own without license to set it off. The gamma sensitivity of the material used is extremely low and subject to noise-removal filters. The exception to this is removing all protective lenses from the sensor makes it detect alpha radiation quite nicely... and also destroys the sensor in short order.
I suspect this app may work for extremely high levels of radiation or an x-ray machine... but an x-ray machine is quite obvious in the normal camera app.
Recommendation: Do not rely on a CMOS sensor for radiation detection
Well I'm Happy
I think the author went through a lot of trouble to write this silly thing, and since Japan, the only thing I COULD afford was to build an flaky ion chamber, and since my own intended purpose IS for a disaster as I note the description states.
I'm glad someone wrote the thing.
I've seen footage of satellite cameras showing gamma interference, and at LEAST the 30 second scan would be helpful to me! Ha!
And remember: You can't always keep the appropriate tool in your pocket- unlike an iPhone. $1 for me = slightly more peace of mind.
I don't just buy Apps willie-nilly.
Seems to try to work. Someone try a pouch of lantern thingies and tell us what it says! Perhaps some Strontium or Pluton type radiation that is XRAY radiation -as stated- will work?
Doesn't work with 4s . :(
