Customer Reviews

Works kinda sorta.

I had tons of duplicate photos and music files that needed “tending” after moving my world from Windows to Mac OS. I read about Gemini and thought I’d give it a try based on reviews. I first tested the demo version and decided it would work well. I paid for and installed the app and then went about locating duplicate files. The functionality of Gemini is fine, but it was hard to use the auto select feature. It was a little confusing so I ended up going through most of the identified files maually and made the remove selection decision. This was a little tedious but I finally was able to delete 1000’s of files. Then I went back to work with Photoshop Elements and found tons of additional duplicates missed by Gemini; so I went back to Gemini to try and find them and Gemini found none. I confirmed that there indeed tons of duplicates that Gemini missed. I could not understand why it was missing these files. I sent an email to Gemini and they responded about two days later. By that time I had already gone through and deleted the dupes. They just wanted me to download the demo software again. My final verdict. Gemini helped a little but it didn’t catch all of the dupes so make sure you double check using other software to catch them all.

Worked great for me

I wanted a de-duplication utility for my Mac. I am on about my 7th Mac and have brought files from as many as three machines being used at a time together into one Mac Book Pro that I use now. Gemini was able to remove duplicate files brought over from those old machines, I did have to do some manual selection, but it was way better than browsing and searching in Finder to trash them. Gemini put the files in Trash where I kept them for a month or so to browse through what I kept and be sure I wasn’t missing anything. There wasn’t anything in my Trash that I couldn’t find in searching in Finder. Eventually I let Clean My Mac 2 empty the trash. Thanks to MacPaw Inc. software, I am using about 2/3 the filespace I had been, indexing seems to work better and my machine is faster in general.

Finding duplicates is good, but selecting them is bad

While this program does appear to find duplicate files and folders, it doesn’t give you any options on how you find them. Who knows how this program decides what is a duplicate, or if I want to drill down to find “same filenames only” or something. The biggest issue that I have with this program is its inability to select deletion cadidates based on anything other than “newest” , “oldest”, “auto”, or “select based on a folder location” . If I have several folders nested within a folder, and all folders contain duplicates, I can’t select files in the root folder, since the nested folders are also within it.

The comparisons seem to work fine, and it is easy to use, but the lack of *any* flexibility when doing selections is a pain. I have to go through every directory manually and select/de-select items because it can’t figure out what I want. Regex selections would make this vastly improved.
