What's New in Version 6.2.3
Here are a few updates for the official Geocaching app:
– 64 bit compatibility—that's twice as many bits as before!
– Performance enhancements for OpenStreetMaps
– And of course, bug fixes
Still no support for retina HD displays
So the March 3rd update still doesn't add support for the retina HD display on the iPhone 6 plus, so it looks like a Nintendo 64 game.
I paid $9.99 for this application, and the free application is the one that keeps getting all the updates. Something is wrong here. Where is the support for those of us that paid money for this application
I just want the application to look nice on my iPhone 6 Plus and to work as expected, and I guess that's too much to ask.
Worst Software Ever
Update for 6.2.3:
Geocaching's developers prove just how bad they are yet again. The app won't even open on my iPhone 6 Plus on iOS 8.1.3.
Update for 6.1:
Geocaching’s third-rate software developers strike again!
Is there any way to get driving directions using Apple Maps, Garmin, NAVIGON, Google Maps, etc., to a cache using this app? Nope. Because the developers are either lazy or inept. Really, this is inexcusable for any app, but especially a $10 app.
Does the app still work correctly when Maps.app is navigating to a location? Nope. The double status bar height messes up the whole app. Have the developers ever used an iOS device?
Can logs be added to a different day other than ‘today'? Nope. Because the developers don’t know how geocachers work.
Can saved logs be accessed on the Geocaching website as field notes? Nope. Because the developers decided to remove a useful feature the app had just to screw with its users.
Does this display distance in miles with two decimal places, like every other GPS solution ever made? Nope, because the developers are morons.
Is there a custom keyboard, like what Wolfram|Alpha has, so you don’t have to constantly switch back and forth between letters and numbers when typing a GCXXXX waypoint code? Nope, because the developers are bad.
Does all of the artwork have Retina-ready images, now more than two years after the first iOS device with Retina display? Nope, because the developers don’t care.
Does the app remember my login credentials if the app loses a data connection? Not always. Sometimes it just fails, and forces me to copy and paste my login details from 1Password again.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HIRE SOME DEVELOPERS WHO AREN’T TERRIBLE
Update for 4.5.1:
No matter what Groundspeak does, their third-rate coders can't do anything right. In this version, my location will sometimes get "stuck", and the only remedy is force closing and re-launching the app. No other GPS-enabled app does this.
The Bing maps don't seem to be the correct zoom/resolution. I always have to manually zoom way in to get any resolution worth looking at. The Google maps don't have this problem, but aren't downloadable, so they aren't useful when planning ahead for areas of bad/no cell coverage.
The advanced search would be cool, if it worked. The "small" container search doesn't work, so obviously no one tested this app before submitting it to Apple. Try searching for "small" and all you'll get is micros. If this was a one-time thing, it would be excusable, but EVERY release is extremely buggy. It's been years now, and I'm tired of it.
Update for version 4.1:
The "Navigate to Geocache" map screen still doesn't work like it should. Version 3.0 of this app is still better than version 4.1. The app still has not been updated for iOS 4 fast-app switching (that takes about 5 minutes for a developer to implement) or background location updates. The app still does not have Retina desplay artwork. The app still uses non-standard UI elements.
Original review for version 4.0:
After every single app update brings twice as many new bugs as new features, I should have known better than to update to the Geocaching 4.0 version.
Waiting for every page to load completely before allowing any button presses is the stupidest idea anyone has ever had.
Not allowing full zoom on Bing maps is a dumb regression.
Not updating the map cache navigation like on previous versions is a dumb regression.
Making you type in the tracking number for a trackable ALREADY IN YOUR INVENTORY is a dumb regression.
Making the app crash every time I try to start it is, I'm pretty sure, a bug.
There are really too many bugs, weird UI choices, and inconsistencies to list here, so I can sum it up in four words:
DON’T BUY THIS APP!
