"The ultimate app for Geography/Geology amateurs and professionals."
- Mel Martin,

Geology CO is the edition of the popular GIS (geographic information system) covering the state of Colorado. It is a self-contained application (no Internet or cellular access required) that contains a vast amount of information about the geology and geography of Colorado. Using the iPhone's GPS, it enables you to navigate the state and get a much better understanding of your surroundings, identify geological formations, mines, quarries, oil wells, rivers, etc....

This release contains 25 layers, which can be combined in any desired way:

- states outlines
- the complete geological map from USGS
- terrain elevation
- almost 90,000 oil wells
- over 7,600 named features (summits, tunnels, cliffs, bridges, etc...)
- fire history
- all earthquakes in recorded history over 3.0 magnitude
- mineral resources
- quaternary faults
- old faults
- public land ownership
- hydrologic units
- USGS quadrangles
- township and range
- urban areas
- counties
- hydrology
- roads and major streets
- railroad tracks
- cities and towns
- 5,500 mines
- potassium/argon dates
- state plane zones
- UTM zones
- main aquifers

Each layer contains additional information about each feature. For instance, the geology layer has a description of the unit's name, age range, rock type, and description. Each mine has a name, the commodity (e.g. gold, gravel, etc...), the name of the company owning the permit, the permit status, the mine type (surface, underground, etc...), the surface owner (private, federal, state, county), and the mineral rights owner. See our web site ( for more information about each layer.

There have been a number of improvements since the release of the sister programs Geology CA, Geology TX, Geology NY, Geology FL, Geology WA/OR, and Geology AZ. Two new layers have been added. Several bugs have been fixed.

What's New in Version 1.2

This is a bug fix release. Version 1.1, which was pulled off as soon as the bug was found, would crash whenever the Continental Divide layer was used.

GIS for the iPhone and iPod Touch!

I can't say enough good things about this app. The latest update adds so many layers that it required a name change from Geology CO to Geograph CO. I'm updating my previous review from four to five stars.
There are many layers of useful information, so that you can customize (and export and print!) nearly any kind of map that you want. And it is all stored locally, offline, so no connection is required.
My favorite part of the new update are the downloadable layers (all free), especially the 1/100,000 scale county by county Streets layers. Now that I can overlay smaller roads on my maps, the information is much more useful in the field. There is also now a bookmarks feature, so that I can save different views, for example the geology or annual precipitation of a particular area (or any other combination of layers). Within the details pages there are links to in-app web pages for further information. There is a location services option to show you where you are on the map (this presumably works well with iPhones, but for an iPod Touch user in SW CO I'm in the dark as to my location). The developer is very quick to respond to questions and suggestions.

It's cool but could be better

This is a cool GIS type program for the iPhone. The location indicator is a nice feature.

I would like to see a bit more detail in the decriptions of the geology and rock types.

Great additions would be: A glossary for people who aren't geologist who don't necessarily know what a diorite laccolith is. Automatic scrolling of map to keep up with location indicator instead of having to keep hitting the find location tool over and over when you're zoomed in.

Great app, needs to be updated for iPhone 5

I use this app almost daily, and it's fantastic. It's responsive, clean, easy to follow, and does not require a data connection for many things. The only complaint I have is that it's still hasn't been updated for the iPhone 5 screen. Looks kind of silly with black bars on the top and bottom. I definitely recommend it though.
