Great terrain GPS app
This app is very impressive. It is able to display a number of different types of maps in an easy to use 3D format. Other apps I have used give you a terrain map, but this one actually puts the map into a usable and scrollable 3D format that helps you see the terrain as it really is. It even provides a terrain height multiplier option so you can adjust the hill heights to your liking (hill height helps it "feel" closer to the users perspective from the ground).
This app accomplishes a lot with many user options but still keeps the UI very simple and straightforward - very important.
One thing that needs changed is when i am looking at an area and decide to download the map, the app takes you back to your current position rather than staying where you are on the map. Please fix this issue.
A few other issues I have run into is the compass lags a lot, waypoint info often lists the DMS coordinates as a "..." because the display box is too small and also after I have used the app for a while, the waypoints stop working (just takes you to current location) and thus I have to close and restart the app for them to work again.
I'm sure these will get fixed but overall a great app, best tracking/terrain map I have ever used.
I've used this for a couple years now. I wanted to purposely write a good review for Maps 3D. It picks up a GPS signal very easily. It will work miles from any cell tower (in Airplane Mode). It's super thrifty on power useage. I love the 3D part when we're out hiking, I can turn on 3D view and see how far we've got to go before it gets level. I love the 'track' part. Before I start walking, I turn on 'record' and it makes a perfect track of where I've been. This is super comforting on the way back down, sometimes I won't remember some landmark and wonder if I'm still on the same trail. A quick look at my tracks shows me that I'm on the same way I came up. It will literally tell me is I'm 10 feet off the trail (awesome if you're walking on snow).
Used to be awesome.
This was an awesome App, once upon a time, now, not so much. They've scaled down the download size/area you can use big time. As an example, you could download all of Yosemite NP in one map but now it requires several (don't know how many because I gave up trying!). You used to be able to zoom in up close and personal no matter the size of the map, as required for actual navigation, but now you're lucky if you can zoom in at all. Sort of defeats the whole purpose of the App. The map you are forced to use to download a map area is worthless as it lacks any sort of detail, you pretty much have to guess and hope for the hit or miss best.
I have contacted the developers several times regarding these issues with zero response.
I'll keep it in my library hoping for some fixes, but at this point it's just another mindless amusement.
