GeogXPert is a Geography app which both serves as a reference app - containing maps which allow you to look up countries and find country information; and as a quiz app - use your knowledge to fill in country and capital names on a blank map.

When you start the app, you see a map of Africa. Other regions are available from the control at the bottom of the screen.

At first the maps are blank - no country and capital names are shown. This is 'Quiz' mode. All the country and capital names can be shown by choosing Show/All from the top toolbar.

You can use the normal iPad pinch gestures to zoom in and out. Drag a finger around the screen to move the map.

Double-tapping on a country or capital whose name is displayed opens a link to the country information on Wikipedia in a browser window (internet access required). To ease selecting the smaller items on the map, tap and hold - a magnifying glass appears with crosshairs to allow you to pinpoint the item. Release your finger to go to the country information.

To hide country and capital names, choose Reset/All from the top toolbar. In this 'Quiz' mode, tapping on a country or capital brings up a pop-up where you can type in the name. If you get the name wrong, the pop-up vibrates. Press the Hint button to give you a letter of the correct name. Your score can be seen by pressing the Scores toolbar button.

For assistance when tapping on small countries and capitals, you can tap and hold - a magnifying glass appears which allows you to position accurately - release your finger to select the item.

Missing a few things

Well, this would be 5 stars except for the fact that Canada, Australia, Alaska and Hawaii are missing the maps! How do you make a geography app and forget about a continent and a half??

For the app itself, It's a great way to test your geography knowlege. It allows you to fill in the countries and their capitals (for the US, the states and their capitals) and you can choose to have a hint if you need one. You can clear the board and start over, or you can save your progress and try another map.

Please add the missing maps to make it a 5 star app. For Australia and Canada, it would be cool to have the user name the provinces and their capitals.

Marty's Genius

Without a doubt, this is one of the BEST geographical apps available (and I own hundreds)!!!! I love being able to display only capitals or only countries or both. I am learning locations, bordering countries and the spellings so easily!!! Beautiful colors too! OUTSTANDING app!!!

Where's the rest of the world?

I can't believe I just paid for an app on Geography which doesn't include all of North America and completely ignores Australia and Oceania.

This app is appropriate for elementary school but is too young for middle school and older. With updates I hope it will become more useful.
