Awful and dangerous experiences
I have rented two cars from get around and both had system malfunctions. The first one had a braking problem and the second had a dead battery. Besides the point that they should be screening their cars this wasn’t even the biggest problem I had. I can understand faulty cars but when there is a faulty car and you need to get somewhere their customer service should be available to help and those renting their car should be on standby. Neither of these things are true. The customer service is never available and I was left in the rain not being able to lock the car with the dead battery at 11 pm waiting to get put off hold for over an hour. Then when I left because it was dangerous and late they finally picked up my call and had the audacity to fine me for leaving the car. There was nowhere in the terms and service of their website that explained what to do in this situation but apparently I was supposed to assume that I had to wait with the car for four hours for a battery (that was not my fault that it died) to be fixed.
This company is so terrible. I never write reviews but if I can prevent just one person from the horrendous experiences that I have had then I will consider this worth while.
Use Getaround to waste time & money!
Twice in a row now, getaround has failed to notify me that my reservation has been forcibly changed, sending me to a car that doesn’t exist when they could’ve easily notified me before hand. With the first car, I was sent to a location in an unsafe neighbor, miles away, and the car was unaccessible. Upon calling customer service (20 mins on hold) the getaround rep *graciously* offered to cancel my reservation and give me a $20 coupon off my next trip.... how kind! The second time, I specifically booked a getaround in a garage to ensure there would be no issues (like last time) and once again, I show up and the car was miles away, when seconds earlier the GPS had shown it was in the garage. After another 20 minutes on hold I get through to a rep who also *graciously* offers to pay for my Uber across town to the new car, in downtown San Francisco, at 4pm rush hour, on Memorial Day weekend. New car has worse MPG so now we are stuck in traffic for more time, paying more money. Try getaround today to have your trip delayed, a horrible customer experience, and everything will cost more!
Good idea made unusable
On paper, the basic idea of Getaround is a great one for a city dweller who does not own a car like me. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to be able to properly support their platform.
I rented a car only to discover that the tires were somewhat flat. Nothing wrong with that - I understand it’s hard to keep close track of and it was a cold day. So I was re-booked and told that refunding the first trip would go through their claims department. Nothing wrong with that either, except the claims department simply never reached out. I contact customer service, they tell me claims will have to contact me and it goes in a loop. A perfectly understandable problem and perfectly polite customer service have nonetheless left me completely unsatisfied with their service. Who wants to pay to rent a car they didn’t drive?
Given the option of other car-rental apps that are able to pay more attention to the condition of their vehicles, there’s no reason to take the risk in choosing Getaround.
